This little lithograph (4 3/4" by 6", 10 1/2" by 11" framed) is titled at bottom "Res. of Levi Davis, Jr., Esq.,/Secs. 28 and 29, Big Rock Tpl, Kane Co., Ill." It is a typical view of a prosperous new homestead in the nineteenth century. Estate owners commonly commissioned local artists to create an image of the proud homes and farms springing up in 19th century America, and this is one of those images, now firmly part of Americana...

Unsigned watercolor landscape painting, late 19th century American origin, the subject a chilly shoreline including snow-covered shacks, two figures, and a small overturned boat in winter storage, measuring 11" by 21" inside the mat (16" by 25" as framed). This is a primitive work, the figures a bit small and out of scale, and therefore a charming work, rather typical of late nineteenth century American watercolor by self-taught artists. Naive painting of peasant figures in traditional clothing, sheep, llamas, birds and snow-capped mountains, signed at lower left by artist Inez Zodqui and titled "ECUADOR" at lower center. Oil on cotton canvas, unframed, 12" by 15 7/8", the scene female figures in a marketplace with their baskets of foodstuffs, signed at lower right center "Getro". This work likely dates to the 1980's or later and is representative of the colorful folk art works produced for tourists by the many talented artists in the country. Condition is good and with a standard 12 by 16 frame added, this would be ready for the wall...

Watercolor of white flowers, 7 3/8" by 7 3/8" (14 1/4" by 14 1/4" in gold metal framing), signed at lower right by Northern California contemporary artist Joyce Herman. Her business card is affixed to the reverse side. The painting is nicely done and in excellent condition.

This is a color aquatint, 9 7/8 by 12 7/8" as framed, the subject a monumental Paris building in the autumn twilight, (the Pantheon, I believe?), numbered at lower left 248 of 500 and signed at lower right in pencil by the noted French 20th century impressionist painter CHARLES BLONDIN (1913-1991). Blondin was active in Paris in the post war years, painting and creating editions of prints which he numbered and hand signed. This example has not been examined outside the frame...

Small oil on canvas laid on board painting of a street scene in Paris, the work somewhat resembling the familiar paintings of A. de Vity. It measures 15" by 11" framed and is not signed. Paintings of Paris streets are ever-popular. A ballpoint pen date on the reverse backing paper (3/24/72) gives some insight into when this painting was created. See other Parisian views in my shop.

Watercolor on heavy watercolor paper, 10 1/2" by 14 1/4" inside the mat, 19" by 22" as framed, not signed, the subject a coconut palm at left, with a schooner-type sailboat in the distance beyond a narrow spit of land, a white gull overhead. The work probably dates to the 1950's or early 1960's...

An old "cabin art" oil on soft paper board primitive style painting of Northern California's famed Mt. Shasta, towering over a rugged landscape including waterfall, tall trees, steep gorge, and a charming log house at left with smoke coming from the chimney. The painting measures 24 1/2" by 19 1/2", unframed. The board is warped, the surface uneven, and there is a snaking 8" crack in the board at right and small puncture at lower center. The work is delicate and requires very careful handling...

Oil on canvas painting, unsigned, 24" by 12", in pinkish wood strip framing. The colors of the painting could be described as creamy light pink with some green. The work might have some age as it appears that "12-81" is written on the stretcher, possibly a date; and olden-days "$2.03" price is stamped on inside of the frame. There is a three-dimensional relief in places, where the artist spread the paint. No varnish, dull surface.

Oil on canvas, 8" by 10" and 1" wide frame, the subject a classic plein air landscape of the low desert. It is signed "Geraldine" at lower right, and on reverse is the inscription "To Dad Happy Anniversary from Mom". The painter was talented but no doubt still an amateur. This is a pleasant decorative painting that is ready to hang on the wall.

A nineteenth century gentleman deep in thought, searching for the answer to an obviously vexing problem, is the subject of this etching, created in the late 1870's by artist Leon Richeton (1854-1934) after the original painting by Scottish artist ERSKINE NICOL (1825-1904). The artist was born in Edinburgh and taught in Ireland in the years surrounding the Great Potato Famine of the late 1840's...

A small (8 1/2" by 10 3/4" framed) oil on board painting of a white farmhouse with red chimney, red barn and classic windmill at center, circa 1900, signed faintly at lower right "A Sowell" or similar. The hand is primitive, charmingly naive; the scene could be nearly anywhere in the central or eastern United States, most likely the Midwest, Plains or east. A painting which brings on a peaceful feeling in the viewer, as it harkens back to simpler times.

A late 19th century small oil on artist board, unsigned, the subject a quiet glen with small waterfall and pond or creek in a forest. The work measures 14 1/2" by 9 1/2" in likely the original gold frame (now with a missing area at top right corner). A cleaning would work wonders. Old Kansas City framer's label and art board shows a Chicago origin.
