Original oil painting with encaustic by Andre Brechet (Switzerland, 1921-1993), circa 1950-1960, of an abstracted still life. A little gem in beautiful original condition. 16" by 18" in its original frame. Andre Brechet was a well known Swiss artist who studied in Paris with Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger.

It is mounted in its original stretcher and the canvas is glued to the stretcher. A replacement support has been added to the middle part of the canvas. In 1968 Haku Maki completed his Animal Song series. It was 12 different prints, one for each year of the Chinese/Japanese zodiac. Each print had the title Animal Song and the kanji for the animal, which was not translated. This print, Animal Song [dragon], 14/50, is a beautiful Maki red. The dragon of the image is a very traditional Chinese character for dragon. In this print Maki used the theme dragon for the first time. This dashing abstract kanji seems to almost swirl out of the paper...

From our European Collection, a fine 19th century original oil on panel by British painter and listed artist William Anslow Thornley (1857-1898), entitled "Moonlight on the Thames." Signed "Thornley" lower left.

Size and condition: 13 inches x 11 inches framed dimensions, approximately 10 inches x 8 inches unframed image size. This painting has been taken care of well, there is only some very minor age-related soiling and minor scuffing to the frame.

Daniel Tretiak, after publishing his book The Life and Works of Haku Maki in 2007, found that he had more to say about prints as they came into his life. And so he wrote Research Notes and published them on this site.
