The couple looks lovingly at each other while working. The figures were cast in 2 pieces each and assembled and mounted to a slate like bases. Very heavy pieces. Size approximately 12"

This is an unframed study in pencil by a noted figure in eastern American art, XANTHUS RUSSELL SMITH (1839-1929). The artist, at age 85, signed it with his distinctive "XS" monogram at lower left, and wrote "Painted in oil this size", and dated it Nov. 29- 1924. The sketchbook paper measures 6 5/8" by 9". It would be interesting to pair this with the oil version, in order to gain insight into the artist's artistic process...

Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955. This stunning example of Fernand Leger's imagery at his peak period in the 1920's is graphite and gouache on paper. It is 34.5cm h by 25cm w in a beautiful frame 55cm h by 45cm w. It is signed lower right F. L. 22 and inscribed "A mon cher Ami Albert Fratellini cordialement F Leger". There is some wear on the edges of the paper as can be seen but no damage to the image...

A strong pencil on paper self portrait in caricature style, 8 1/2" by 7" (14 1/4" by 10 1/4" framed), signed at lower center by the noted German painter and author, JOACHIM RINGELNATZ (1883-1934). The self-mocking profile drawing shows the distinctive nose and hair shock, both featured in a 1983 German 50 Pfennig postage stamp, a canceled example of which has been taped to the glass at lower right by a previous owner of the drawing...

Watercolor and ink drawing of the Seine in Paris by Notre Dame, 7" by 8 3/4" (13" by 15" framed), signed at lower left in pencil "Leprin". This COULD be a work by well listed artist MARCEL LEPRIN (1891-1933). I hesitate to state unequivocally that it is, as the long hand signature differs from the commonly seen all-capital letters version. The artist was known to do very similar works of Paris, and many other parts of France, from Normandy to Marseilles...

A small pencil sketch on irregularly shaped scratch paper, roughly 4 1/4" by 4" (5 1/2" square in its simple wood frame from which it was removed for photography). The subject is an empty vase casting a shadow while resting on a narrow tabletop. Of possibly great interest to any researcher of the artist's life and career, the work is clearly a sketch, perhaps for a finished painting or pastel...

Many we have feature Vaslav Najinsky who is considered the greatest dancer of classical ballet. The drawings are all original with watercolor and gouache and pencil notations and signed. Sir Francis Dodd, British (1874-1949), "Charles March Gere," This drypoint etching of the English landscape painter, Charles March Gere, c. 1927, measures 12 x 10 1/4 inches and is pencil signed on the lower right margin. Francis Dodd was born in Wales and trained at the Glasgow School of Art winning the Haldane Scholarship in 1893 enabling him to travel and study in France, Italy and Spain. During WWI he became a portrait war artist producing more than 30 portraits of senior officers...

Hermine David 1886-1970 French This is a fine original oil on canvas by French artist Hermine David 1886-1970. The subject is a group of strollers in Luxembourg Gardens, Paris. This painting done circa 1930 is signed lower right and measures 18 1/8X15 inches. Housed in a custom French style frame. Hermine was one of the Ecole de Paris artists. In 1918 she married Jules Pascin. Their association seems to have been an influence on the artwork of both artists.

A color print of the year 1930, issued by Frost and Reed of Bristol and London, titled "The Pytchley Huntsman--Frank Freeman on Pilot", after a painting by the famous English equestrian artist ALFRED JAMES MUNNINGS (1878-1959), measuring 20" by 19 3/4" inside the existing linen mat and 31" by 30 1/2" in the wood framing. The print is NOT pencil signed. Munnings is perhaps the pre-eminent painter of all things horses, at least among 20th century artists...
