In 1971 Haku Maki produced this large print, Poem 71-25. It was an edition of 100. This new arrival was produced in Tokyo and went ultimately to Florida in the US. It stayed there for a long time. In the course of its life there it was not treated nicely: It was folded in two places. The print had foxing, it had many ailments. Then it finally made it to my restorer. It had challenges there too: some liquid spilled on it, forcing a delay in the restoration process...

I hesitate to state unequivocally that it is, as the long hand signature differs from the commonly seen all-capital letters version. A miniature portrait by M.E. Mynerts (also referenced as W.E. Mynerts). Glazed and housed in a cast foliate case measuring 2 3/4" by 2 3/8", with an unglazed aperture on the reverse containing a braid of hair. The overall condition of the painting is excellent, with no cracks, chips, bowing, or restoration. The case is also in excellent condition.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Very little is known about Mynerts, and his miniatures are quite rare, with only one signed example found. However, his style...

DESCRIPTION: Oil on canvas painting of a Mexican pueblo (or village) by artist R. M. Domez. The multi-story adobe structures with slanted roofs are seen in the escaping light of an approaching storm. Frame is carved wood and gilt; dating from the first half of the 20th C. and in excellent condition. DIMENSIONS: Sight: 23 1/2" wide (59.6 cm) x 18 3/4" high (47.6 cm). In the frame: 29" wide (73.7 cm) x 24 1/2" high (62.2).
