A rare and powerful painting directly on a rather crude wood panel, unframed, 16 3/4" by 23 3/4", by the important twentieth century Peruvian artist ALICIA BUSTAMANTE VERNAL (1907-1968), featuring a group of native people climbing in the bleak mountain landscape, the forward group carrying a shrouded body for burial. The work is titled on the reverse "El Entierro" (The Interment/Burial"), and is dated there 1954, with additional notation "Ayacucho" (the Peruvian city)...

A charming antique oil on canvas of a young girl cozied up in a doghouse with a snoozing bull mastiff dog, signed (incised in the paint) and dated 79 (1879). The signature is JH SHARP in capital letters. For a number of years there has been confusion as to whether these 19th century dog paintings of this period were by the noted Taos, New Mexico artist Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953), as the signatures are very similar indeed, and the artist did study in Europe before coming to America...

In 1970 Japanese print maker Haku Maki (1921 – 2000) produced this large Wind image. It is 84c x 84 cm; 33 " x 33" . Provenance; Maki produced this print and this copy was sold to a Japanese buyer it stayed in Japan until it came to me last week in Beijing this is one of the few times I have been able to obtain a Maki print from Japan not through a dealer. When the previous owner decided to sell he did so through an auction in Japan; then it was fully restore in Tokyo and I acquired it...

Despite my best efforts I am unable to read the signature, which looks something like "Christylu Walsh", but this is a wild guess...

Oil on canvas painting, 20" by 24", unframed, the subject the historic old Presidential Palace in Haiti's capital city, Port-au-Prince, signed at lower right "Ysmay". The naive work shows the palace as it looked before the tragic earthquake of January 2010, in which over 200,000 people in the country lost their lives, the infrastructure suffering enormous damage. J-10 is an exciting example not only of Haku Maki’s depiction of Chinese characters but also his use of a hard gold-edged board (instead of simple single or multiple sheets of paper). In the last year of Maki’s life, Daniel Tretiak tells us, he was ill but continued to work. He did lithographs on shikishi board, which was a hard board covered in white rice paper. The back was yellow with a small design in gold and the whole board is gold-edged. These words apply to J-10 as well...

By well listed HENDRIK GERRIT TEN CATE (1803-1856) is this 9 1/2" by 13" watercolor on paper painting (15" by 19" as framed), laid long ago to a card, the subject a few chickens pecking the soil in front of a ramshackle thatch roofed structure I would think might be a barn or out building, except for the telltale domestic woodsmoke venting from the roof. This is a fine old drawing of an old-style wooden house with porch, an ancient old tree arching over the structure and two tiny figures at left. The drawing on paper, laid on a board, measures 14" by 9 1/2" inside the mat and 19" by 14 1/2" as framed. There does not appear to be a signature anywhere, but considering the quality of the imagery we must conclude that the artist was trained and listed. Poem 71-76 is a yellow-gold print with a bit of a paisley influence. It is number 28 of an edition of 154. Created in 1971, it measures 13in wide x 19.5in high. It is in very good condition. There is tape residue on the back but the front is perfect. .
