Johannes Wierix, Flemish, 1549-1618, "The Betrayal of Christ, Agony in the Garden". This is a rare early engraving by Johannes Wierix after Pieter van der Borcht, printed with an image on both sides of the sheet. Each image measures 4 1/2 x 2 7/ 8 inches, 1583, a good impression on a very early laid type paper, published by 16th century book printer and publisher Christophe Plantin. One side of the sheet shows the 'Betrayal of Christ', the other 'Agony in the Garden'.

Very finely cast sculpture of a horse head and neck in cast iron, mounted on heavy black marble plinth, early to mid 20th Century, unsigned. Tavik Frantisek Simon, Czech, 1877-1942, "Quai Voltaire au Printemps". This sunny Paris street scene was created in 1914 by Czechoslovakian artist Tavik Frantisek Simon. Soft ground etching and aquatint, image size 12 7/8 x 14 5/8 inches, pencil signed, edition of probably 250, cat: Novak 225.

Hermine David, French, 1886-1971, "La Corrida". A great image of a Spanish bull fight, this etching with drypoint measures 10 1/8 x 11 1/2 inches, published in 1929 in an edition of 100, pencil signed and numbered. Hermine David was born and raised in Paris and at the age of 16 was accepted into the Ecole Des Beaux Arts, later going on the study at the Academy Julien...

For the natural history aficionado or decorator, a PAIR of original finely detailed drawings in watercolor and ink, one titled faintly in pencil "Scorpions", the other featuring other unidentified but quite exotic-looking creatures with many legs. Each drawing is 8 1/4" by 6 1/2" inside the mat, and the works are identically framed (13" by 11")...

By the hand of one of the masters of 20th century Japanese printmaking is this woodblock on paper, 14 1/4" by 19" (21 1/2 by 25 3/4" framed), signed in pencil at lower right by the artist within the image area, and bearing inscriptions in Japanese in the margin at lower left and lower right. The image is a traditional temple garden in winter, a light snow covering the lanterns and roof, and apparently wilted flowers killed by the cold unable to lift their heads...

Gouache and pencil on paper, 16 3/4" by 12 1/2" (slightly larger as simply framed), signed at lower left by listed American artist JOHN EDWIN JACKSON (1876-1950). The scene is a genteel one, with a proper southern gentleman and belle, in a grand architectural setting. The artist was very prolific, illustrating many books and magazines in the first half of the twentieth century, yet, little seems to be known about him. A circa 1880 American painting on canvas of a white clapboard house on a farm or rural land, the structure surrounded by bare trees, white fences and outbuildings, a sitting dog strategically placed at center staring directly at the viewer. The work measures 18" by 22" and 22" by 25" framed...

At first glance this appears to be a 17th century Dutch landscape oil on panel by someone like Ruisdael, Hobbema, Cuyp, Van Goyen, or other famous artists of that time and place. Closer examination reveals that this is actually a late 20th century work in that style, signed at lower right by artist J M GRISWOLD. I do not see information on the artist but he or she was clearly familiar with 17th century Dutch art...

Federico Castellon, Spanish-American, 1914-1971, "By the Arks". This 1941 lithograph measures 9 x 11 7/8 inches, pencil signed, edition of 250, published by Associated American Artists, NY. Primarily a self-taught artist who was heavily influenced by Dali, Picasso and Rouault. At 18, Castellon had his first solo show with the help of his mentor, Diego Rivera, who recognized the young man's talent...

This 1927 etching by the American artist Roland Clark measures 7 7/8 x 9 3/4 inches, pencil signed and titled. Roland Clark studied at The Art Students League with J. Carroll Beckwith in New York. An avid outdoorsman he combined his love of the outdoors into his many paintings and etchings. Selected to do the 1938 Federal Duck Stamp Design, he also wrote and illustrated books about his hunting experiences.

Oil on canvas of a clapboard cottage by a lake in spring, 18" by 24" with 3" frame, signed at lower left "J.C. FRANCES". I do not see a listing for the artist but he or she was obviously at the very least familiar with the paintings of Henry Pember Smith (1854-1907) and George W. Drew (1875-1968), who painted eerily similar scenes. This painting shows a gambrel roofed cottage with blooming pink blossomed trees and ducks----an idyllic spring idyll in New England or New York state perhaps...

An old watercolor painting of the Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy, signed at lower left by the noted artist VITTORE ZANETTI-ZILLA (1869-1946). Measurements are 9 1/2" by 13 1/4" (14 3/4" by 18 1/2" as framed). The artist studied in Venice and in his mid twenties traveled through Europe, which had an effect on his style. Warren Davis, American, 1865-1928, "Seated Nymph," Etching, image size 8 x 5 3/4 inches, pencil signed l.r. "Warren Davis" on wove paper. Davis studied at the Art Students League in New York and became known for his etchings of idealized female figures. Many were used on the covers of Vanity Fair and Life magazines. Later in his career Davis exhibited in Europe and the United States including the Pennsylvania Academy and the Salmagundi Club.

This delicately rendered etching is a great example of Davis's images of graceful female nudes, many of which were used for Vanity Fair and Life magazines in the very early 1900s.
