This pair of 20th century Chinese carved ivory statues are about 12 ¼” high, 3” wide and 2 ¾” thick. They depict a standing sage and lady. The sage’s left hand carries a stick, a double gourd wine container is tied on the stick. His right hand holds a goose in front of his chest. This very well carved 20th century Japanese netsuke is 1 ½ inches high, 1 ¼ inches wide and a little more than 1 ¼ inches thick. It depicts a mouse bending over, scratching his chin. It is signed “Shozan”. The carving and polishing are just great and it is in excellent condition.

This is a wonderfully hand-carved netsuke depicting Bakemono "Unreal Thing or Goblin" with a Rokuro-Kubi (whirling Neck), in other words a Goblin creature with an expanding neck like the spring of 'Jack-in-the-box", that, according to legend, twists its head around and leers in the faces of sleepers. Kashigata have long been in use for making molded sweets in Japan and many other parts of the world (especially Asia and Northern Europe.) In Japan, shapes often include felicitous or auspicious themes for luck, long life, wealth, etc. This one, shaped as a wasabi root, is unusual and interesting.
