This is a contemporary, excellently carved polychrome netsuke depicting a standing Goddess Benzaiten, also know as Benten, the only female member of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, who is known as the Water Goddess, and Patroness of Music, Poetry and Learning. She is holding a Chrysanthemum flower on her right hand. Intricate detail and vivid colors characterize this wonderful miniature sculpture carved by Akihiro Zusuki, a netsuke artist currently living in Hokkaido, Japan...

Obi (sash) with design on both sides. One side taupe colored silk embroidered in brown, murasaki, pink, green and blue with a design of bamboo leaves and matsukawabishi. The other side decorated in silver and some colored silk on murasaki colored silk with an intricate design of a river bank with stone barricades, containers and vegetation: bamboo, pine, chrysanthemums and momiji. The end of the obi marked with two strokes of gold thread. Japan, early Showa period.

Japanese obidome (sash ornament) with polished moss agate stone, its natural pattern perfectly resembling a single tree with well defined branches. Obidome is worn on an obi cord that holds the obi sash together, it is the only type of jewelry worn by Japanese women on formal occasions, and could serve as netsuke as well. Amazing natural picture, excellent finish and patina. Metal fitting on the back with two loops for an obi cord. Height 1 4/4 inches.

Splendid Japanese incense container, also known as kogo, used for tea ceremony. The persimmon has a small lady bug sitting near the head of the persimmon. The incense container contains an inscription reading: Rakushisha, which is a small hut in the Sagano district of Kyoto. The hut was the summer home of Matsuo Basho's disciple, Mukai Kyorai. The hut was given the name when a hurricane blew all the persimmons off the trees planted in the estate...

Kashigata, mold for making Japanese sweets, in the shape of a wasabi root. Carved wood, ca. early-mid 20th century. H.1.5"(3.75cm) x L.8.25"(21cm) x W.3.5"(8.75cm). Kashigata have long been in use for making molded sweets in Japan and many other parts of the world (especially Asia and Northern Europe.) In Japan, shapes often include felicitous or auspicious themes for luck, long life, wealth, etc. This one, shaped as a wasabi root, is unusual and interesting.

Demitasse coffee can and saucer, Royal Crown Derby Imari. Red stamped mark and year code mark for 1923, the saucer with impressed mark Derby 1923. Height of can "2 / 5 cm, diameter of saucer "4/ 10.6 cm. Condition: fine.

Pilgrim's cotton hanten (hakue) with many stamps of sacred places in Shodo-shima in Kagawa prefecture. They are called "Shodo-shima Hachiju-hachi Kasho", 88 Sacred Places in Shodo Island. It is said Kobo-Taishi (Kukai) had ascetic practice and prayer at those places, who founded Shingon Mikkyo in late 8th century. In good condition except for light stain in the upper back sleeve. This is a really pretty depression glass pink Colonial, aka Knife and Fork, 3 1/2 inch high Footed Sherbet dish made by Hocking Glass from 1934 to 1938. This very nicely molded mid 20th century Guan-Yin statue is 9 5/8” high, 5 ¼” wide and 2 ½” thick. It depicts Guan-Yin holding a Ruyi seated on a lotus surrounded rock. A basket containing fish sits on her left side and three fish hold her right sleeve. The artist’s seal is on the back of her robe. Aside from a small chip from a fish tail, it is in great condition.

A wonderful translucent blue celadon dish decorated with a low-relief floral motif. This piece was made by one of the few great female Japanese potters of the 20th century—Suwa Sozan II, daughter of Meiji Imperial Court Artist Sozan I.

Suwa Sozan I (1852—1922) was born in an area of what is known today as Ishikawa prefecture. After a short stint in the military he took up pottery design and painting under Touda Tokuji in 1873...

This porcelain figural group was produced in Germany by Hutschenreuther in the 1950s. It measures 9 1/2 inches high and 6 inches wide. The piece has a glamorous 1950s look. The gentleman has three fingers held up for three kisses from his lady. The group is finely modeled with excellent detail. It is hand painted to give just enough color and definition to the couple.
