Ceramics decorated by Zen monks are seldom seen and this piece is no exception. Two red enamel characters are boldly brushed in red enamel conveying the strong bond between Zen and the tea ceremony. This is an exceedingly rare calligraphy on hand-made paper by famous Kyoto artist Tokuriki Tomikichiro. He was best known for his prints, but was originally trained as a painter. It is delicately brushed on Japanese hand made paper (24.2 cm x 21 cm), a bit smaller than shikishi size, and much thinner. Two edges are deckled. It is inscribed “Close Friend” (知音). A fine pair of Kashmir lidded jars or vases. The copper base was first engraved with special tools to create the design in relief, the grooves were later filled with glass and then embellished with additional engraving and wonderful shiny gilding. This dramatic Big Red—a name Daniel Tretiak attached to Haku Maki’s large red prints, usually of single Chinese characters (kanji) on black backgrounds—is a character meaning ordinary or commonplace. But Maki has done it in a stand-out way. It is 17.5in W x 24.5inH. A thick-walled censer, shaped like an urn with “Heaven soaring” handles, standing on a three legged base. Both censer and base have been polished in the past but are now achieving a decent patina. The censer fits the base perfectly. The base has an interesting mark. 19th century.
