A rare and wonderful Chinese porcelain bowl with beautiful glaze designs of cranes flying over crashing waters, each carrying a different object of auspicious nature, such as a lotus, a scroll, a fan, a sword, a gourd bottle, and a basket of fruit. This incense-burner has a flaring rim form raised on three ogee feet and has its original patina and considerable carbon incrustation from many years of use. Two lion's head handles embellish the body and the cast Da Ming Xuande mark is centered on the base. The interior is darkened from use and the exterior shows small areas of darkened bronze where not obscured by blackish patina. There is a slight dent to the rim. Keman in cut bronze gilded with mercury. Decorated with flowers and Karyobinga (winged musical deities). Keman are hung in Japanese temples and replace bouquets of flowers. Usually Kemans are only decorated with flowers. The one presented here is exceptional with its 4 karyobinga cast in relief and riveted on the copper plate cut with flowers. A well patinated 16th/17th Century bronze Gu form vase cast in archaic Shang dynasty style. This is from the collection of the late Reverend Victor Farmer. Condition - the interior base has been replaced or re-glued and there are the usual 'production' repairs - made at the time of manufacture. This item was probably made during the reign of the Wanli emperor - 1573 to 1619...
