A rare set of hors d'oeuvres (nut or sweet) dishes, in fitted hardwood box, painted in black ink in Qianjiang style. The bases of the nine dishes are unglazed. This set was probably made in the second half of the 19th Century during the reign of either the Tongzhi (1863-1874)or the Guangxu emperor (1875-1908). Condition - very good - no chips,cracks or restoration, but, as is common with Qianjiang painting on porcelain, there is wear to the overglaze decoration of the dishes...

A Chinese cabinet with two sections inside. The top shelf has two drawers and the bottom shelf has a single drawer. The bottom of the cabinet has metal rings to attach ropes, where the cabinet can be moved anywhere. A few similar cabinets were used by officials during the Qing to transport official documents when assigned to distant regions in the empire. Jade carving of a bat spreading its wings on one side and on another side a coin shaped motif. Bats are considered to be an auspicious animal where the name is synonymous to fortune in Chinese. The coin contains a four character engraving possibly reading: Fu Shou Quan Shuang, or roughly translated as having both fortune and longevity. A finely decorated blue and white bowl, painted in Kangxi/Yongzheng style depicting numerous (mostly zodiac) animals in an imaginary dreamlike landscape. The four character mark on the base reads "precious object copying antiques" and this item was probably made during the reign of the Guangxu emperor (1875-1908). Condition - there is a restored rim chip (top left - enlargement 12) and two restored hairlines. There is also a glaze bubble and two small rim chips (enlargement 10)...

Guangxu marks, 1875-1908

The exterior of each bowl is decorated with nine butterflies in flight in brilliant funcai enamels. The lower portion of the bowls just above the footring is encircled by a band of lappet panels, and below the rim of each is a Greek key band all in the same enamel palette. The interiors are undecorated, and glazed with the same even, white glaze as the exteriors. The bowls rest on a raised footring...

Guangxu sealmark and period, 1874-1908

This orange-brown pottery brush pot, possibly produced at the Yixing Kilns, is hand-sculpted to simulate an old gnarled tree trunk with various crevices, stumps of limbs and peeling bark. It is incised with two Chinese characters, one in archaistic style, the other in cursive script. On the base, there is an impressed Guangxu sealmark. Though unglazed, it has an old patina from use and possibly remnants of colorless lacquer...
