Beautiful keyaki wood choba tansu (merchant's chest), from the Matsumoto region of Japan. It has a beautiful allover woodgrain and has black iron hardware with iron studding. It has two sliding panels with an iron lock down its center, drawers of varying sizes with warabite handles, and a pull-away panel with a kan (ring pull) handle, opening to a small compartment.
Size: 34.5" height, 31.5" width, 14.25" depth
Samurai menpo mask with the 'fierce' ressei expression, with the iron and red lacquer surface which gives the face deep and marked wrinkles.
The generously sized nose adds a distinctive element to the face of the mask, together with the brush moustache.

This is a beautifully decorated large 12 inch Japanese Satsuma vase from Kinkozan. It is unique and rare piece because of the gold wisteria decorations. The painting and fine enameling are exquisite. A fabulous vase that is in overall excellent condition. At one time it was made into a lamp. The drill hole has been masterfully restored. It is signed on the underside with an impressed mark and was never signed in gold in the center bottom.

An antique Japanese Matsumoto Kimono Tansu made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. All original hand made iron fittings including stylized Mokko handles with unusual front drawer corner decorative plates. Each side has its main swivel carrying handles where a bamboo pole slipped through and two attendants on each side would easily transport this chest. A hawk rests on an elaborate perch, the feathers fluffed up, each uniquely carved on this rare okimono from the Mushiake kilns of Okayama prefecture. It comes in an ancient kiri-wood box. The notation on the side of the box states it was received in late Meiji 27 (1894) from the former Head of the Okayama fief Ikeda Mochimasa.
