Old Japanese Biidoro (vidro, Portuguese) kanzashi made out of glass. Glass making was introduced to the Japanese by the Portuguese in the16th century and there has been glass manufacturers in Japan ever since that date. It was particularly popular in Japan during the 19th century. The style of this kanzashi is called tama (ball) kanzashi. The ball is 3/4" (in diameter) natural coral. It is rare to find a glass Kanzashi in this condition. The kanzashi is 7 7/8" long. Meiji period (1868-1912)...

Wonderful large cast Iron Kama Tetsubin. Lid is iron with lovely round flower motif on top. Tokugawa Crest of Paulownia Flowers decorate both sides of kettle. Japanese antique box constructed of Kiri (paulownia) wood with original dark red lacquer finish. The top iron handle may be used to carry the box, and it also opens the top shallow compartment for safely keeping calligraphy papers. Below, the main body of the box holds two long drawers originally used for ink stones, brushes, and other scholar's implements.

Rare Japanese Kutani porcelain figure of mother and child, individual work of art charmingly depicted with mother is kneeling and holding her child with focused attention after bath with bright reddish and raised floral design on towel wrapped at her feet and with hair held up with gold comb. Signed at bottom "Kutani" in kanji and with circular impressed mark. Good condition.

A fine embroidered purse, probably made to hold tissues at a tea ceremony. The exterior is embroidered with Sagara embroidery (Peking knot), and has a sarasa design of stylized butterflies, birds and flowers. The sarasa (Indian Chintz), first came to Japan through the Nanban trading in the late 16th century and was tremendously favored by the tea masters and some daimyo (regional lords) during the Edo period...

Antique Japanese imari vase with a rounded middle and fluting mouth and foot. Two small grey and yellow fu dogs serve as handles. The body of the vase has bright yellow enamel background with scrolling vines, and images of fu dogs playing with each other. The bottom of the vase is marked in red. Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese buffalo horn kushi (hair comb) with lacquer decoration of blooming peonies. Very well made, good lacquering in subtle colors, wonderful work in Japanese taste, some old stable peeling to lacquer. Length 3.4 inches.

Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese wooden kushi (hair comb) with gold lacquer decoration of various objects including an old tile and a samurai helmet among floweing plants, design continuing on the back. Beautifully made, very good lacquering with some losses and wear as can be seen on photos, losses to the tips of 2 teeth, wonderful work in Japanese taste. Length 4.04 inches.

A Fukagawa five and 3/8 inch tea saucer dish. Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration. Mt. Fuji mark in underglaze blue inside the foot ring. Late Meiji or early Taisho. Good condition. Japanese hardwood tobacco ban (smoking box) or ladies vanity box with carrying handle. The lid is inlaid with shell and enamel coins and birds, with an animal and wire finial. The middle hardwood divider lifts away to allow access to the lowest sections with four compartment.

Antique Japanese set of 7 imari plates, with cobalt blue underglaze phoenix motif accented in gilt, surrounded by a network of various flowers, red and gilt emblems, butterflies, and cobalt blue geometric design along the inner rim. The underside features designs of mon with leaves and tassels, and six character mark in the center of the foot.

Antique Japanese Noh theatre mask of a young woman, or Onna. Hand-carved cypress wood with katabori chisel mark patina. Her face is hand-painted in dimensional flesh tones, with blackened teeth, red lips, and wisps of hair.

Japanese 17th/18th century scroll painting of a buddhist priest, outlined in a very rare style of incredibly tiny calligraphy mantra. The mantra repeats "Amida Butsu Nam Mo". The meditating priest holds a strand of mala beads and a willow branch and is seated upon a green lotus throne on clouds. The figure is most likely "Dengyo Daishi", the monk who brought Buddhism into Japan...

Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese buffalo horn kushi (hair comb) encased in silver sheath with gold and shakudo inlays representing beans thrown during setsubun ceremony performed at the New Year around the house to exorcise the oni (demons). Superbly made, crisp detailing, wonderful work in Japanese taste, in great condition. Length 3.39 inches.

Antique Japanese scroll painting attributed to Kano Seisei (1795-1846). The image is an arrangement of red and white flowers with kiri leaves in its center, hanging from a sudare (bamboo screen) with long tassels. Signed with red chop.
