Antique Japanese 4 panel shoji screen (sliding door panels) painted with wonderful scene of monkeys in a persimmon tree, painted in sumi ink and light colors on paper with clouds of gold leaf flecks, 4 monkeys are painted in tree, a mother monkey holds a baby and another monkey looks on at the base of the tree, a stream flows through rocks nearby, beautiful detail, Shijo School, Meiji Period. Total size: 115" long x 68" high Size of each separate panel: 28 3/4" wide x 68" high each.

Antique Japanese scroll painting of Kannon also known as Guanyin. The Goddess of Mercy sits on a rock overhanging a still body of water. She is silhouetted by the full moon. Painted in sumi-e ink on paper. There is a seal in the lower right hand side.

Kappa (cape) which was called "hikimawashi" or "maru-gappa" in old days. It is made of cotton with warp kasuri checker board pattern on one side and cotton stripes on the other side. It was worn on the occasion of travel over kimono. It has wool collar, probably imported. The word "kappa" came from Portuguese "capa". The Portuguese first came to Japan in 17th century. An antique Japanese Suzuribako (calligraphy writing box) made of Kirinoki (Paulownia) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. All hand forged iron hardware including the Warabite handles on the lid and drawer front.

This box originally functioned as an essential instrument for storing writing paper, brushes, ink and the inkstone. Whether it was a merchant writing a customer receipt or a professional calligrapher writing a personal letter for a farmer, this box was always ready for duty...

Antique Japanese Choba Tansu (merchant chest) from the Tohoku area, made of with Kiri (Paulownia) wood front and Sugi (Cryptomeria) wood frame. Five exterior drawers including an unusual wide and shallow drawer just beneath a compartment with sliding panels. The sliding panels have horizontal slats and frame made of Kurinoki (Chestnut wood). A small safe box on the right-hand side of the tansu has a hinged door which opens to reveal two small drawers on the inside. Lovely natural finish...

An antique Japanese Byosho Bako (peddler's chest) made of Hinoki (Cypress) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware. Two loop rings where a carrying rope was once attached allowing the merchant to carry this chest on his back. The hinged door opens to 5 drawers used for the storage of wares for sale. A few small ink stains on the upper surface attests to the merchant using the top as a writing surface when writing sales...

This fireman's sashiko coat is the one in Edo period. (1850) It is dragon's motif in the indigo dye cotton. It is very impressive. There is damage in the collar. 82cm x122cm (32.1" x47.8") sashiko hanten are the coats worn by firemen for protecting their bodies. Some have pictures,some are of all repeated patterns, and the others are unfigured indigo ones or ones with a medalion on the back. It is a polychrome in the cotton ground that is black, is gray, blue, blue, white, beige, etc...
