Late 18th to early 19th century boxwood netsuke of a shishi (Buddhist lion) seated with its front paw on a largehollow ball, its mouth open and upper teeth showing. Wonderful depiction of its ferocious face and curly mane and tail, beautiful wear to the surface, really nice feel of age to the piece. Height 1.32 inches.

Shino pottery is produced in today's Gifu prefecture since 16th century and it is distinguished by thick white glazes, red marks and the surface of small holes.

A pair of small Japanese shrine candlesticks. Each would received a long standing candle inserted onto each small spike. Swirring vines and flowers depicted on both half round base and round lipped top. Unusual small size.

19th century staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) in a shape of a die with dots highlighted in black ink. Nice quality work, beautiful warm patina, some wear. Cube side 0.42 inches.

This is Coat which Shugendo Gyojya of Edo wore. As for this, upper hemp is used. This is dyed in persimmon juice. And light brown is very rare and is very impressive. This has one hole of around 1cm on the part of the shoulder. The sumi dyed in Hangi has the part which soaked. A Fukagawa porcelain 11 3/4 inch long covered tureen. Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration including butterflys inside the cover. Mt. Fuji mark inside the foot ring and Mt Fuji with Fukagawa Sei inside the cover. Ca. early 1800s

These dishes have an underglaze blue design of treasure ships (wishes for good fortune). The reverse of each is painted with a stylized wave design encircling the foot and a double gourd mark with two characters is painted on the bases. Acquired in the 1960s from an American collection. There are minor nicks to the glaze on the rims, otherwise good condition – no cracks or repairs.
