This is a hydrangea pattern and a high technique of yuzen dye, and shadow and the color of the leaf are expressed boldly. It is the gem which does not exist in other tsutsugaki. It is a painting of wonderful yuzen dye. Tsutsugaki is done by a considerably exact technology. It is a wonderful masterpiece of Edo at latter term. This fireman's sashiko coat is the one in Edo period. (1850) It is dragon's motif in the indigo dye cotton. It is very impressive. There is damage in the collar. 82cm x122cm (32.1" x47.8") sashiko hanten are the coats worn by firemen for protecting their bodies. Some have pictures,some are of all repeated patterns, and the others are unfigured indigo ones or ones with a medalion on the back. A hog mouthed beaker of conventional form decorated with Flowers of precious appearance or sometimes referred to as Tang Flowers, karahana. A six character Dai Min Seika nensei mark is painted within the foot-ring. The beaker is in good condition with no cracks, chips or restoration. It measures 9.2cm in diameter and stands 6.2cm high. Waraji (straw sandal) Gata (mold). This mold was used to make the straw sandals worn by farmers. It is of solid carved wood. L. 50cm(19.75") x H.9cm(3.5") x W.9cm(3.5"). Acquired in Yamagata Prefecture in NE Japan (Tohoku), this piece exhibits the wonderful folk qualities of the region. Hung vertically, the "shelf" portion of the mold can hold a small flower vase, creating a lovely "wabi" arrangement for the tokonoma.
