Antique Japanese Bizen ware ceramic sculpture of a pair of puppies. Each beautifully sculpted with charming features. Bizen ware pottery is made of the reddish brown clay with high iron content that is found in the area around the village of Imbe in Bizen province. Fine signature on base.

Antique Japanese geta tansu (shoe storage chest). Made of sugi (cryptomeria) wood with marquetry of various woods on the front. The top sliders open to reveal a compartment with a shelf. The lower sliders open to a compartment with 2 shelves. On the right hand side is a compartment with a full height hinged door originally intended for storing umbrellas.

Antique Japanese kuruma tansu (wheeled storage chest) from the Northern Sendai area closer to Iwayado. The front of the chest is made with keyaki (zelkova elm) wood with lovely grain and original red-orange translucent lacquer finish. The frame is made of sugi (cryptomeria). The large, raised iron lock plate on the top drawer depicts a pair of cranes flying in clouds. The middle two drawers are held in place with a locking bar (bo) with pine tree shaped ironwork...

Excellent painted work of Okuda Mokuhaku (1800–1871) who is known as the reviver of the Akahada ware traditions during the late Edo and the early Meiji periods.

Mokuhaku Okuda, a wealthy merchant, was also a notable tea master of the nearby city of Koriyama, worked in the Akahada kiln in the mid 1800`s...

Drawer box (kodansu). The exterior is entirely covered with vegetable fiber basketry surrounding reserves in the shape of fans in silver and gilded copper, chiselled with birds and flowers. The interior is soberly lacquered in black (roiro) and bears powdered Chinese characters...

Antique Japanese carved bamboo kakehana, wall vase for flowers. This section of bamboo has been carved with the figure of Quanyin (Kannon). The Goddess of Mercy is seen floating amidst storm clouds, ribbons of lightening streaking across the sky around her. There is a small rectangular hole in the back of the vase so it can hang from a hook or nail in the wall.

Japanese 4-panel screen painting (byobu) of two white herons and a weeping willow tree. One bird stands on the edge of a lake while another flies overhead. A weeping willow tree bends it's branches over the water. Painted in sumi-e ink and mineral colors on silver leafed paper. Signed.

Japanese Edo to Meiji period Kanto style personal wood clothing chest (isho-dansu) with a single drawer on top and hinged burlwood doors opening to three additional drawers below. The top drawer has a rectangular black iron lockplate. The burlwood doors (referred to as "kannon-biraki do") are supported by five iron hinges on each side and a horizontal iron strap with a central round lockplate to secure and lock the doors. Japanese late Meiji to Taisho period Tokyo style rectangular naga hibachi with beautiful zelkova (keyaki) wood grain. Five storage drawers on the front have copper warabite handles. A removable rectangular wood insert is placed over the fire container which contains an original copper liner with nice patina. Two inset carrying handles are at the sides. Early 20th century. Measures 13" high (15 1/4" high to the top of the wood insert) x 26 3/4" long x 14 1/4" deep...

Antique Japanese Buddhist candle holder with long handle. Made of bronze and incised all over with an octopus vine motif. The chalice shaped stand sits on a chrysanthemum shaped foot and has a candle pricket that is hinged so it closes when not in use. A long handle is attached to one side so it can be carried.

19th century wooden netsuke of a water buffalo resting peacefully with its head raised and its legs gracefully tucked beneath. Superbly modeled capturing the essence of the creature, fantastic depiction of its bulk, great patina, in excellent condition. Signed ICHIBOKU TO (carved by Ichiboku) on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 470, number 748). Length 1 5/8 inches.

This is genuine Japanese Shoki Imari Excavated Chawan (Bowl).
It is dated from early Shoki Imari which dated back to 1630-50 maybe
little earlier. Shoki Imari did not have the process of making porcelain with bisque,
glazed then design painted. Porcelain making process skipped
bisque and glaze making, rather they put right into glazing and painting design done
in same time...
