Evocative blue decorated henko bottle vase with fluid brush decoration and sgrafitto decoration prominently signed; SEIRAN. The cobalt decoration sits on an almost ash style glaze with spots of blushed areas, similar to Hagi pottery. I have not been able to find out anything about the potter, but the brushwork and use of space suggests a full time potter, used to working in this particular style.

This henko is in perfect condition with its original signed box and measures 8" X 8.5" x 6".

A brilliant pin with sterling, 14k gold, coral and turquoise by contemporary Navajo artist L. Eugene Nelson. Trained in engineering and drafting, he meticulously works out his designs to scale on graph paper. His workmanship is precise and scrupulous with each component made by hand and every piece one of a kind. This intricate pin is 2 1/4" long and 1 3/8" wide. Haunting shapes are scraped into the raw clay like some ancient Nazcan riddle on this huge ball vase by Sato Kazuhiko. The vase is 15-1/2 inches (40 cm) tall, 17 inches (43 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. There is no box. Kazuhiko (b. 1947) is a widely displayed artist and author of many books on the ceramic arts. For more information on this artist see Modern Japanese Ceramics in American Collections (1993). A seminal Karatsu fresh water container by master of that style Nakagawa Jinenbo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Chossen Karatsu Mizusashi. Raw earth is supplanted with rich iron into which flows curtains of black into which flows rivulets of blue. Two lug handles drape from the sides and it retains the original ceramic lid.
