Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac, French, 1884-1974, "The Beach at Saint Tropez," Etching with drypoint, image size 9 1/4 x 11 1/2, 1934, edition of 40, pencil signed and numbered. This print is also in the MoMA collection.

This is a larger than typically seen watercolor of roses, in the style prevalent around the turn of the century. The work is signed at lower right corner "E. J. Fischer". Measurements are 20" by 29" and 25" by 34" in the white wood frame. There is a listing for an artist in Denmark by that name but I believe this to be an American work and unrelated to the European artist. Condition is excellent. Found in Southern California...

This painting is something of a mystery, in that it depicts a fantastic classic castle on a hill, obviously in the Old World, a donkey pulling a card in the foreground......yet, there is a modernity to the work, especially in the somewhat cubist handling of the lines of the architecture, but, also, there's modernity in the entire structure of the image. Here's an unusual item, a painting on white milk glass, in oil, measuring 5 1/2" by 7 1/2" and 8" by 10" as framed. The somewhat folk art feeling work is not signed. I would judge the age as anywhere from about 1880 to about 1920----a nautical type could probably date this more accurately by noting in which decade such a ship would have existed. Condition is good with minor paint losses from scratches and aging. However the small losses are not really noticeable at normal viewing distance...

The scene reminds of how hungry gulls loyally follow the back end of a fishing boat. I have not located information on the artist. The painting could well benefit from a cleaning after about 70 years.
