A circa 1868 albumen photo on thin paper, 9 3/4" by 7 1/2" inside the mat and 19" by 15 1/4" framed, with the blind stamp at lower left of noted early Italian photographer GIACOMO BROGI (1822-1881). The subject is identified at bottom edge in the image, as "Gerusalemme" (Jerusalem) and is assigned reference number 4019 there. This is a view of the so-called "Golden Gate", the oldest of the gates in the walls surrounding Old Jerusalem...
An impressionistic palette knife painting of dramatic, high, already snow-streaked mountains in peak autumn season, signed in the paint at lower left "W HARISCH". This 14 1/2" by 19 1/2" work (18" by 23" as framed) is by listed Canadian artist WILLIAM HARISCH (1914-1967). Harisch painted in a style that appears clearly European, and indeed works of his native country (one titled "Heidelberg") have come to market...
This 6 1/4" by 10" ink drawing on paper (11 1/2" by 13 3/4" as framed) is titled at lower left "Garden of Sounds" and is signed at lower right "STANDISH" and dated "52" I believe. It's a subtle work that does not take well to being photographed, (and I've had to enhance--darken--the photos a bit to make it easier to appreciate on a screen) but, viewed in person, it is quite an impressive and delicate work that reminds one somewhat of some of the drawings by Paul Klee...
Cityscape Etching by Paul Geissler, 1919, signed in plate and in pencil, Frame Size 18 x 13". The artist was born in Germany in 1881 and died in 1965
Ink drawing with some pencil outlining visible, subject an idyllic northern lake bordered by tall spruce or pines, a ti-pi with Indian at center left, a canoe plying the waters at center distance, signed at lower left "Leb-Wendell", 7" by 9 3/4", 12 1/2" by 15" as framed. At first I though this an etching but close up inspection reveals it to be actually an ink drawing with fine detail. One can see the pencil outlining and guide lines placed by the artist...
MISS CHI
Vintage anonymous oil painting on canvas, "MISS CHI - 3-years old Toy Poodle, 1980". 41 x 31.7 x 2 cm (16.14 x 12.48 x 0.78in)...
Scarce Currier and Ives lithograph print, sheet size 11" by 15", image area 8 1/2" by 12 3/8", titled "Prairie Hens". This is apparently a scarcer small folio image, as Cohenour prices it over $400 in his Currier price guide. The print is in acceptable condition, with the image area generally clean, and only one tiny spot of foxing visible, although there is a diagonal light crease at upper right corner, visible only when viewed in raking light...
This carved lapis lazuli melon shape snuff bottle is 2 ½ inches tall, 1 ¾ inches wide and 1 ¼ inches thick. The artist carved a large melon as the snuff bottle and a smaller melon with leaf and spouts as decoration. The snuff bottle is well hollowed but has some natural flaws. It is in great condition.
Circa 1960 oil on canvas painting of the familiar and oft-painted Moulin Rouge night club in the Montmartre section of Paris, 12" by 16" (18" by 22" in the pleasant period frame), signed at lower right by mid century Parisian artist H. PIERREL. I do not see a formal "listing" for the artist, although I have encountered other works by this talented hand. The painting should bring back memories of voyages past, and should please any true Francophile...
Etching on paper, 6 1/8" by 9" inside the mat (13 1/8" by 15 1/2" as framed in attractive oak), the title "Emigrants on the Plains", bearing at lower left margin "F.O.C. Darley, fecit." and at lower center "Entered according to act of Congress, A.D. 1869, by D. Appleton & Co in the clerks' office of the district court for the southern district of N.Y.", and at lower right "H.B. Hall, Jr. sc."...
Lithograph, 14 3/4" by 12 1/4" inside the mat, 21" by 18" as simply framed, signed in the plate at lower left "Merlin" and dated nearby 1939, also numbered (I think, also, in the plate, interestingly), 14/34 at lower right. This is a scarce work by the American Scene listed artist MAURICE MERLIN (1909-1947). The artist's short life likely accounts for the lack of recognition of his work...

For the fans of the "Big Eye" paintings, here is a pair of mid century retro style works in oil on board, each 23 1/2" by 11 1/4", and each signed at lower right. The signatures are hard to decipher; I'm guessing "Balmiani" or "Dalmiani". If I am reading them at all correctly, I am not able to tie these names to any of the listed, recognized big eye painters. Regardless of authorship, these are sure to please the devoted big eye collector...
Beautiful German Print circa 1919 22x17 inches
A beautiful lithograph of Magdelan College circa 1842
A small poster, reproducing a perhaps vintage 1920's sepia-toned photograph of a young African-America woman posing nude in front of fireplace, issued by the pioneering Los Angeles fine art photography gallery G. Ray Hawkins, to promote an exhibition of photographs by the noted Harlem Renaissance African-American photographer, JAMES VAN DER ZEE (1886-1983). Van Der Zee's works are coveted today, selling at auctions of fine photographs and African-American memorabilia and art...
This is an oil on board painting of a small house in a forest landscape, apparently unsigned, in the general tradition of the Hudson River School, 13 1/2" by 21 1/2" plus gold framing about 1 1/2" on a side. The work could date from about 1900 to maybe the mid 1920's, I would think. It is a decorative work that gives the feeling of a more expensive painting, when viewed from a distance. There is soiling, some light abrasions, and a pressure crack in the board at extreme upper right----but no...

Charity in the Cellar Engraved by Leney, after Hogarth's painting Heath edition
The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art. Heath edition 1822 An original copperplate engraving — over 195 yea...
Found recently in Maine, this is an antique oil on board painting, 12" by 14 3/4" as framed, unsigned, the subject purple grapes and a ripe peach, the autumnal grape leaf suggesting the season of harvest, all on a marble ledge or table, with a distant view beyond. The gray academy board, style and framing suggest a date of execution of about 1880. The painting is very American in feeling, bordering on folk art as there's a naivete. The frame has wear and an obvious loss at lower left corner. ...

A very accomplished pastel drawing in high key tropical-style colors, featuring a bird's eye view of the landscape around San Gimignano, the popular ancient Tuscan hilltop town in Italy, southwest of Florence, much beloved and frequented by tourists from around the world. The work, 13" by 10 1/4" (20" by 16" framed) is signed at lower right by contemporary artist Helen C. Butler. On the backing is a printed sticker of the artist giving the title. Excellent fresh, clean condition. Allow for r...
A watercolor painting of a tall pagoda, 20 1/2" by 11" (24 3/4" by 15" framed), signed at lower right by artist JI WON CHANG and dated 1968. This being a common Chinese name, it is difficult to tie this work to a particular artist, and there are no apparent auction records under this name. Nevertheless we see a competently created work, in a difficult to master medium; consider the complex fleshing-out of the tower's detail. Fifty year old mat has discolored and should be replaced with an aci...
Ink and watercolor drawing of cows in a field, 13 1/2" by 21 1/2" (20 1/2" by 29" framed), signed at lower center "Sam Smith" The modeling of the animals shows that the artist was a keen observer of their forms and a talented draftsman. Apparently this is not by the listed New Mexico artist Sam Smith (1918-1999) as the signature is not similar and the work itself does not resemble that artist's work. This watercolor is in excellent, fresh, clean condition, the paper very white.
A rarely seen hand signed (ball point pen, lower right margin) poster printed to publicize the 1992 Taos Arts Festival, the poster featuring a painting of the Taos Pueblo against snow capped mountains, western horses in the foreground. The piece measures 27" by 20 1/2" as framed (no glass). ILA MAE McAFEE (1897-1995) was an American painter, muralist, illustrator and author born in or near Gunnison, Colorado. She is known for her miniature paintings, for her murals in public buildings (often, ...
An example of the desirable original Currier & Ives lithograph print of 1864, "The U.S. Sloop of War 'Kearsarge' 7 Guns, Sinking the Pirate "Alabama" 8 Guns, measuring 9 1/2" by 12 1/2", plus gray 20th century frame about 5/8" wide. There is hand coloring of the blue sea, blue of the flag, and a little yellow and pink hue in the explosion on the foreground ship. The print being over 150 years old has inevitably acquired a number of the faults to which Curriers are prone, including overall ...
One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop), this is a fine image in charcoal on paper, 13 3/4" by 16 1/2" as inexpensively framed without mat, signed at lower right by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Considering the subject matter of this drawing, I would think it li...
Unsigned oil on canvas, circa 1970's or 1980's, unframed, 28" by 22", the subject a ceremonial dance mask and head wear such as might be seen in use in the course of special events on one of the reservations in Arizona or New Mexico. During the late 1980's I was at Zia Pueblo in New Mexico, and was privileged to watch one of these ceremonies. The work is colorful and includes many classic iconic symbols of the Southwest, such as the thunderbird, the snake, the saguaro cactus, tipi, and possibl...
Watercolor on paper, 14" square and 3 1/4" frame and mat, unsigned, of flowers in a vase. This is the work of a skilled and likely listed artist but I do not see a hint of a signature. It was purchased near Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the reverse framing paper shows what appears to be a Houston, Texas address. Condition is excellent with no stains or foxing.
Cyrus Seymour works "China Doll" in bamboo frame dated 1991. Dimensions: 28"H x 20"W Age: 1991 Material: Bamboo, gauche
This is an original painting in gouache on paper, 23 3/4" by 23 3/4" square, in a narrow metal frame, apparently by an unlisted artist named Gertmenian. This is an Armenian name, and the painting was found in Los Angeles, where there is a large Armenian population. If you're seeking an eye-dazzler of a painting that contains strong primary colors, consider this decorative art. The photos were taken through the glass, which will be discarded as it's broken at lower right anyway; allow for refl...
Impressionist painting signed at lower right with conjoined initials "MP", unframed, 24" by 18", the subject three female black dancers, two wearing festive hats. There is considerable energy in the scene and the stylized figures are by a trained hand. The painting likely dates to the 1960's or possibly 1950's. There are some light abrasions at lower left, a flaked area near the extreme lower edge there and another small edge loss at top, and light overall soiling.
Beautifully executed in black and gray with minimal color, understated still life of an old style tin coffee pot, cooking pot, and white cup, 8" by 10 1/2" inside the mat, 15 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed. There is possibly a monogram in lower right corner but I cannot attach it to any particular artist. The item is in a frame that evidently once came with a work by American landscape artist George Renouard, as the title on the label is "New Jersey Farm"---and there are old Butterfields auction la...
