From our African Collection: This "Ikenga" Southeast Nigerian Shrine Figure is from the Early to mid 20th century. A characteristic of all Ikenga Shrine Figures are their exaggerated bull horns. The basic form of an ikenga is a human figure with horns symbolizing power, sometimes reduced to only a head with horns on a base.

This is an antique Corpus Christi "Cristo Morto" from the late 16th century Renaissance period. It was made after a model by Guglielmo Della Porta.

The sculpture is of excellent quality fire-gilded bronze, finely cast with a hollow back and pierced with nail holes, then hand-finished with an artist's tools and gilded. It is believed to have been cast from a wax model. The sculpture is a stunning portrayal of Christ. His long, curly hair cascades down his right shoulder, framing his face...

The superbly modeled alligator head jaw moves on its hinged mouth when its lever is pushed. The head is emerging from from marshy grasses waiting to catch its prey. The alligator is mounted on ebonized oval support which is held by a gilt bronze rococo plinth.

Overall condition is very good to near excellent though the gilt patination shows minor losses or fading. The base is late 18th / early 19th C. though the alligator dates later in the century...

This incredible Clovis point, found on the Little Missouri River in Nevada County, Arkansas in 1928, is made from highly translucent novaculite of which only a few are known to exist.
