Set of THREE Italian circa 1946 paintings on canvas, in decorative gold matching frames, unsigned, each 9" by 11 1/4" as framed, the subject familiar scenes of Venice, executed in the classical eighteenth century style of Canaletto or Guardi. These works were commonly produced for the tourist trade by talented artists. This set evidently dates to the immediate post-war period, as one bears a date stamp on reverse, 3 Ottobre 1946 and a "Made in Italy" circular sticker...

Recently acquired from a Southern California German-American family liquidating a household, are twenty-one watercolor paintings by "Uncle Max" (Markus "Max" Hansen, 1898-), featuring mostly Old World landscapes and street scenes, with a few interiors in the mix. Some are framed in wood, some unframed, some have glass, some do not, some are signed, some are not. The artist was talented but is unknown outside of the family...

Oil on paper, irregularly shaped, maximum dimensions approximately 10" by 16" and 2" wood frame, signed at lower left "S. CIEJKA". I do not see a listing for this name, which appears to be of Polish origin. The painting is in oil on paper. I think from the looks of it, a date around 1940 would not be out of line, but it is hard to tell. The colors remind me of that period, and it is obvious that the piece is not from the late 20th century...

A fine oil on canvas painting, the subject a water powered mill by a peaceful stream in the autumnal French countryside, signed at lower left by the noted painter and graphic artist PAUL EMILE LECOMTE (1877-1950). The work (26" by 20", and " by " as framed) exhibits the highly developed classic impressionist technique for which the artist is noted. Lecomte was a student of his father, Paul Lecomte Sr. (1842-1920). He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris...

A quality work, the medium watercolor on a very thin linen type canvas, framed behind glass, 14 1/4" by 18 1/2" (22" by 26" framed), signed at lower right and bearing there a monogram cypher in an oriental art style, by San Diego artist and collector ELSIE STEWART KIMBERLY (1882-1966). There is little information on this talented woman artist, who was evidently most known around the San Diego area...

Oil on gray art board painting of a pretty lake surrounded by trees, houses on the distant shore, signed at lower left in ink "F. C. Hawkes" or similar, probably circa 1935. There does not seem to be a listed artist name that would correspond, but the painting stands on its own. It is quite dirty so a cleaning and a fresh frame would be transformative. There is a diagonal crack to extreme upper left corner...

A vintage portrait painting of a red-haired, middle-aged lady in circa late 1930's to 1940 style hat, 13" by 10", (22 1/2" by 19" framed), signed at lower right by listed Southern California artist BERTHA TOWNSEND COLER (1865-1948). The painting, oil on canvas laid on Masonite, exudes a very spontaneous, free, sketchy feeling that is quite appealing, demonstrating the skill of the artist...

An impressive work, oil on canvas laid on Masonite, circa 1950, featuring a twilight view of the Seine, bridge, Notre Dame, and numerous pedestrians and vehicles, all in an impressionistic hand, measuring 23" by 31" (31" by 39" in attractive period distressed style white frame). Pencil and watercolor drawing of a young dark-haired woman, seen in profile from the shoulders up, 6 1/4" by 7 1/2" inside the mat, 12 1/4" by 13 1/2" in modern framing, signed rather illegibly in pencil at lower left. The signature could be "Gillian Evans" or similar, though this is a guess. There is an English artist by that name who is known for her portraits of people and animals, though I cannot tie this drawing to her. There is a Great Barrington, Massachusetts framer's label on the re...

Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 15 1/2" by 11 3/4" and a 1/2" wide narrow modern frame, no glass, probably dating to circa 1950, the subject a fluted column 19th century style American framed mirror with flowers in a vase placed before it. This is a simple composition but the anonymous artist was obviously skilled in the use of watercolor and also had a sense of composition. There is a modernist touch, in the way the flowers are stuffed into the foreshortened space. Condition is good, with the...
