This dramatic Big Red—a name Daniel Tretiak attached to Haku Maki’s large red prints, usually of single Chinese characters (kanji) on black backgrounds—is a character meaning ordinary or commonplace. But Maki has done it in a stand-out way. It is 17.5in W x 24.5inH. An original lithograph on heavy paper, unframed, pencil signed at lower left by the noted Israeli contemporary artist MENASHE KADISHMAN (1932-2015). The print, featuring Kadishman's trademark imagery, of a sheep's head, measures 29 7/8" by 19 3/4". Henri Duvieux, French, 1855-1882. This small jewel is a very fine example of Duvieux' work. The painting is 6" by 8" in a 4" 19th C frame. It is in good condition and is signed lower right. Duvieux was known for his atmospheric paintings of Istanbul and Venice and often painted pairs of paintings of dawn and dusk. His paintings sell for up to 25,000.

Alfred Hair (American, 1941-1970) was an early Florida Highwaymen painter. This large painting depicts two leaning palm trees just above a beach with two high tide lines of debris, curling waves and seagulls all under a sunny but partially cloudy sky. Signed, “A. Hair” lower left. The painting is 24 ¼ x 36 ¼ inches. The apparently original frame is 29 ½ x 41 ½ inches. Painted on panel (Upson board).

In 1990 Haku Maki produced as many as 6 different images of famed Mt Fuji(Fuji-san). Here are three, each one printed from a different block.

Antique watercolor painting, beautifully executed, the image featuring a wrapped ceramic vessel, old leather-bound books, and a pair of red ornate slippers, the work signed at lower right in pencil "Emily J. Hare 1892". The painting, paper laid on a thin board, measures 10 1/2" by 14 1/2" and 14" by 18" framed. Despite the obvious skill of the artist, the only online references I see to this name are to a woman born circa 1871 in Maine to English and Canadian parentage...

A miniature painting of a lovely young woman attired in a double strand coral necklace and a blue gown with puffy sleeves and a pink flower at the waist sash. Excellent condition with no issues, and in a period black wood frame. Sight size is 3 1/2" by 2 7/8", and the framed size is 5 5/8" by 4 1/2".

NOTE: I have shown two full length photos as the background color varies somewhat depending on whether the painting is seen in natural, fluorescent, or incandescent lighting.

An English early to mid nineteenth century watercolor, featuring a house or cottage with cross-hatched windows, an arch at left with two small figures nearby, and tree at right. The work is apparently unsigned. The hand is a little stiff and primitive, but the work is antique and charming. Someone spent a considerable sum on the pleasing newish gold frame and hand-drawn "French mat" with lines and glittery goldish foil border...

Oil on canvas Italian scene of the famous Bay of Naples with smoking Vesuvius volcano, unsigned, circa 1880 to 1900, measuring 18" by 28" (23 1/2" by 33 1/2" as framed). This is a charming scene, painted many times since the 17th century, of fishing boats in the bay, the backdrop being an ornate tower at left, distant houses on hillsides, and at right the curling smoke plume of simmering Mount Vesuvius...

This print is by John Woodhouse Audubon, the younger son of the famed naturalist John James Audubon, and very much an active part of the family of talented artists documenting the botany and the animals native to North America. An antique Kearsley hand coloured snake copper plate engraving print from 1801. This is a really fine example and it is entitled "VIPER-HEADAED SNAKE", from the original by James Heath.
