A classic painting of the West---a river in a mountainous piney landscape, (titled, probably in artist's hand, on stretcher, "Mountain Stream"), by the noted, well-listed California impressionist artist, JOHN ANTHONY CONNER (1892-1971). The oil on canvas measures 20" by 26" (24" by 30" in old hand-carved frame. The work is stamped on the reverse with artist reproduction rights notice; the piece likely dates to about 1945 or 1950...

A contemporary watercolor painting of a sailboat, signed at lower right by artist "Seargeant". Measurements are 12" by 10" inside the mat and 19 1/2" by 17 1/2" as nicely framed. Very clean overall, just a very little few specks of soiling on the inside of the non-glare glass, at upper corner. The artist had a good understanding of the wet-on-wet technique, as he used it to advantage in the gray, threatening sky and in the water.

A fine example of the work of Canadian-born artist who is most associated with California, ALICE BLAIR THOMAS (1857-1945). We see a composition in various shades of green, with sheep grazing under a tree in a peaceful scene. The oil on canvasboard measures 14" by 10" (21 1/2" by 17 3/4" in modern-day California style gold frame that has apparently been painted matte black). Thomas painted in the Toronto area in her early years, as well as in Europe and even India...

An oil on canvasboard painting, the subject a tawny western American landscape populated by four cowboys and six horses, signed at lower left by contemporary artist Richard Harris. I do not see a listing for an artist by this name but obviously, he was talented, seeing as that he captured so beautifully the horses-- a notoriously difficult subject to paint well. The work reminds a bit of that of listed California artists Bill Bender and James Colt...

A classic painting of the California desert and mountains, oil on Masonite, 12" by 15" (15" by 18" in vintage old frame possibly carved by artist), signed lower left by noted California impressionist JOSEPH FREY (1892-1977). This is likely a view looking west towards the towering 11,000 foot high Mt. San Jacinto massif which looms over Palm Springs. The artist has interestingly painted in a "liner" border in a cream color; this is part of the painting and not a linen liner...

An example of the etching "Signorum Veterum Icones", published 1668, after the artist's own drawings and those of other artists of the time who studied the classical statuary of the ancient world, with initials of the artist, JAN DE BISSCHOP (1628-1671) (also known as JOHANNES ESCOPIUS). The work measures 10" by 5" inside the mat and 15 1/2" by 9 3/4" in pleasant contemporary gold frame in excellent condition...

Attractive, nicely worked pastel landscape of California in the fall, 14" by 17 3/4" (24" by 27 1/2" presently in gold metal frame), signed at lower left "Dorothy Dennison" and dated there 1962. The piece is very clean and fresh. The artist was obviously a skilled practitioner when it came to this difficult to master medium.

A scarce watercolor work of Southern art, the subject a street scene with traditional historic architecture including a church, two tiny figures and a tree, measuring inside the wood frame 9 3/4" by 7 3/4" (14 3/4" by 13" framed). The scene could be New Orleans or Charleston, South Carolina; I found the work in western Virginia. There is a signature at lower right but all attempts to read it have failed, though, it does appear that the date 1905 is at lower right...

Oil on board painting of old houses in an American town, 12" by 16" (15" by 19" framed), the auto in the scene suggesting a circa 1930 date, unsigned, housed in an old 19th century Victorian style frame with patterned gold inner fillet. The work suggests to me the famous watercolor art of American artist Charles Burchfield, or at least other painters of the "American Scene" and WPA period. The work has been subjected to water which has left a pattern of water drops over the surface...

Japanese limited edition color etching and aquatint titled "Le Tournoi II" (The Tournament II) by Taiwan artist Shaih Li-fa (Xie Lifa) dated 1968. Pencil-signed, titled, and numbered 3/25 in the bottom margin. Xie Lifa (b. 1938) studied drawing and sculpture in Paris in the 1960s before relocating to the U.S. in 1968 to focus on printmaking. Paper size: 17 1/2" x 15" (plate: 11 1/2" x 9 1/4"). Printed on heavy rag paper with large margins. Very good overall condition...

This is a nicely executed watercolor featuring a red barn and small house apparently in autumn, signed at lower right and dated there 1973 by contemporary artist JOHN S. McFEDRIES. I do not see a listing for the artist but some other works by him can be viewed on the net (and I have a New Mexico watercolor by him in my shop).
