Oil on canvas luminous scene of coastal Greenland, with chunks of blue ice floating in the harbor as tiny structures on the rocks are overwhelmed by the grand landscape, a sole kayaker in the inlet at right center, 27 1/2" by 39 1/2" plus frame 2 1/2" wide on a side, signed at lower left by listed artist ALEXANDER WILLY DANNERFJORD (1904-1961). Dannerfjord was a talented artist who executed mostly landscapes of Denmark. Evidently he must have traveled to Greenland at one point in time...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing and frame 10 3/4" by 22", signed at lower right, and dated there '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

A drawing with ink, pencil, watercolor and gouache on laid paper depicting a harbor scene very much in the manner of the French artist Claude Vernet (1714-1789). Perhaps there is a print source for this drawing. The work is signed in the lower right, “Tho. Ryves. 1770.” The most likely artist is either the father Thomas Ryves (1721-1788) or his son Thomas (born 1753) from the distinguished Dorset, England family...

Bold, likely American oil or acrylic on paper painting, with black, white and greenish-blue elements standing out against a red background, 19" by 23 1/2" (24" by 30" in shiny chrome metal type framing), signed in pencil at lower right with initials "M K". The contemporary work includes some identifiable forms, such as a five-pointed star at lower left, and one wonders if the black imagery at top is a human form including head, two breasts, legs, and feet...

A charming drawing of a village square and church, in graphite, a little wash, and perhaps chalk, on mellow, soft laid paper, 10 1/2" by 8 1/2" (17 1/4" by 13 1/2" in inexpensive modern framing), signed at lower right by the French artist and illustrator RENE ROUSSEL (1885-1962). The artist though undeniably talented, has unfortunately and unjustly become obscure, little known to today's collectors. It took an internet search to find his birth and death dates and assemble a biography of sorts...

One of a number of fresh and clean examples of William Russell Flint prints in my shop, this is a fine photolithograph, published in 1956 in a limited edition of 700 examples, titled "Le Quatorze Juillet". Flint was in the southern French town of Mauvezin on Bastille Day 1954, and it is thought possible that the sketch he made from his hotel room of the scene he saw in front of him ultimately became this image...

Brown chalk drawing of a mother and child, 11 1/2" by 7" (14 1/2" by 10" framed) signed at lower right by artist MAXIM BUGZESTER (1910-1978). The artist was born in Stanislov, Poland (present day Ukraine) to Ruthenian-Jewish parents. He grew up in Vienna and began an art education there. Bugzester became a student of the important German expressionist artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976)...

A contemporary painting in Old Master style, the subject a Dutch street scene with no less than eight figures, a church in the center background. The unframed 24" by 20" oil on canvas is signed at lower right corner "W. Caufield" (or "Canfield"). Note the attention to detail in the cobblestones and stone buildings (which are snow-dusted). The style derives from classic Dutch Old Masters and 19th century painters such as Cornelis Springer, Adrianus Eversen, and others. Condition is excellent...
