Something of a mystery piece, this unsigned mixed media drawing in gouache, watercolor, pencil and ink rather resembles the stage design work of the noted artist Eugene Berman (1899-1972). Measuring 14" by 19 1/2", unframed, the drawing is on paper laid down on another sheet of paper. One of a number of fine Bermuda watercolors in my shop, this is a work featuring white-roofed houses on the water, several small boats visible at left, and yucca at right. The work measures 6 1/4" by 13 3/4" and 16" by 23 1/2" including old gilded oak frame and gold mat typical of the period. The artist signed at lower left "A. T. Smith" and wrote "Bermuda '95" at lower right. I do not see information on an artist by this name. Nineteenth century Bermuda views are scarce and desirable...

A vintage woodcut print in black with touches of yellow and red in the windows of the picturesque seaside structures, unsigned, titled in the image "NOEL", white speckles (sprayed?) indicating snowflakes, 12 1/2" by 9 1/2" framed. The scene resembles Maine villages such as Port Clyde or Castine. Likely a work from that region, circa 1940's, possibly 1930's. I opened up the backing and found no further information.

Old (possibly 19th century, early 20th at latest) American watercolor painting of a small cove and beach, unsigned, 9" by 12 5/8" inside the present mat (13" by 16 3/4" in modern framing), with some experimental sketching by the artist on the reverse. On that side he/she wrote "Aug. 19 water deeper, especially in the curve". The drawing is by a talented hand which unfortunately did not sign it. Could be as early as 1880's, as late as about 1930 I would imagine...

An extensive country landscape featuring rolling fields and meadows, the evidence of man including a dirt road, fence posts, and distant house, as chickens forage at center right. The oil on canvas, 22" by 25" work (27" by 30 1/2" framed) is signed at lower left by listed German artist OTTO MARX (1887-1962). There is not a lot of information on the artist but he did produce nicely painted impressionist works of the German countryside...

No listed artist comes up with a search for this name, but that does not diminish the quality of the work itself, which probably dates to about the 1940's. There are two missing small areas of paint at left, otherwise condition is excellent. The frame post-dates the art and is pleasant and complementary.

This work needs some TLC, due to a large rip, unstable and missing paint, and grime......a vintage late 19th century/early 20th century work on canvas, 18" by 30", unframed, apparently unsigned, the subject one of the volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest. The painting should be saved for posterity, but for that to happen, it will require relining, cleaning and inpainting by a professional restorer. If you are a restorer yourself, this would be an ideal acquisition.
