One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) not many in color, this is a fine image in crayon on paper, 11 1/4" by 15" in the oak frame without mat, signed at lower left by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

Samuel Palmer 1805-1881 British This is an original etching by British artist Samuel Palmer. The title is "The Early Ploughman" It was created in 1861. The image measures 5 1/4X9 7/8 inches. THis is the 6th state of eight. Printed on a medium weight laid type paper. Partial watermark visible upper left. This image appears in the Palmer catalog as image number VII.

Contemporary pencil and watercolor drawing in simple metal gold framing, the subject two women apparently dancing in a late 19th century cafe, the drawing 8 1/2" by 5 1/4" inside the mat (the entire sheet significantly larger, at 11 3/4" by 8 1/4"), signed at lower right "Dan" or "Han" or similar. The scene reminds of George Grosz' 1920's drawings of Berlin cafe goers, or even Toulouse Lautrec's Parisian cafe's. The drawing is nicely crafted.

A small unframed watercolor painting of an early adobe structure of Northern California, similar to the historical, rare structures that may be seen today around the plaza in Sonoma, 7" by 9 1/2", signed at lower right by listed artist JEAN G. WALFORD (1875-1938). Walford was born in England, but was in Berkeley by 1917. She ran an art gallery until her passing in 1938. The watercolor came from an old Bay Area collection.

A well-painted oil that reminds very much of the posters for JAWS, the terrifying 1970's movie in which an enormous shark terrorizes a summer beach coast community. The work is oil on canvas, 16" by 20", unframed, and is signed at lower right by artist Ryan Wells, dated nearby "10". The shallows, clear water, and nearby vegetation suggest a locale like southern Florida, or southwestern Florida. The shark is especially well depicted. Clearly the artist shows talent...

Maria Ada Gianni 1873-1956 Italian This is a fine original gouache painting by Italian artist Maria Gianni. The scene is the Bay of Naples with Mt Vesuvius in the background. The painting is signed lower left. The image measures 5X12 1/2 inches and came to us in what appears to be the original early frame which measures 8X16 inches.

A nicely painted and peaceful 1920s-30s watercolour of a winter scene with a deer. This 5-1/2" x 3-5/8" sight size picture is in the original gilt embossed wood 11 x 9" frame with a gold mat. It is unsigned but looks like our other painting by L. Livingston (our stock number 5727), and it is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, fading, tears, staining, foxing, losses, damage or repairs...

A colorful print "Share Chanukah with the Children of Israel", pencil signed at lower right margin and numbered 46/150 at lower left, by the eastern Europe-born, Jewish-American artist CHAIM GROSS (1904-1991). The work measures 22" square (23 1/4" square in metal frame with detail-dulling non-glare style glass). Gross was well known for his "direct carving" sculpture in wood and stone, and began experimenting with printmaking as far back as 1929...

Lithograph print titled in the artist's hand on the reverse in pencil "Carol Singer", signed in the plate on front right corner and dated there 1939. The unframed print measures 11" by 8 1/4" inside an old gray mat. The artist, BENJAMIN MESSICK (1891-1981) was born in the Missouri Ozarks and served in Europe in World War I. He showed early artistic talent. After his return he was in California, studying at Chouinard in Los Angeles, and winning scholarships and awards...

Oil on canvas landscape of a forested, peaked mountain rising into scudding clouds, unframed, signed at lower right and dated 1876 by the noted well listed American artist from Massachusetts, D. JEROME ELWELL (1847-1912). This work measures 14" by 24 1/2". Elwell was intent upon his art at an early age, when he was spotted on the Gloucester waterfront sketching the marine scene, by one Samuel E. Sawyer, a wealthy Gloucester ship owner and patron of famed artist Fitz Hugh Lane...

Ingatz Marcel Gaugengigl, American, 1855-1932, Etching, "Bellisima", image size: 7x7, pencil signed

A fine woodcut print on Japan type thin, delicate paper, 8 1/2" by 6 1/2" inside the mat, no frame, signed in pencil at lower right and dated there 1931, a monogram in the printed image at lower left, adn inscribed "To Hal" at lower left, by the well listed artist IGNATZ SAHULA-DYCKE (1900-1982). The dramatic subject is mysterious and difficult to describe: a woman, perhaps somewhat sinister or even possibly Death, comforts a young girl, as a younger boy looks on from the right lower corner...

Original oil and encaustic (hot wax mixed with pigments) painting by Steven Clippinger (American, born 1943). 24' by 36". In excellent original condition. Signed "Clippinger" and dated 1978 l.r. Steven Clippinger is a noted American artist who worked in Florida and in California. Works in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Price Waterhouse Collection, Rochester Institute of Technology, etc.
