CHRISTO (1935-2020) in close collaboration with his late wife JEANNE-CLAUDE (1935-2009) is considered one of the most important "installation" artists of modern times. Born in Bulgaria, he was in Europe in 1957 and became an American citizen in 1973. Around the early 1970's he came to world attention with a fresh approach to art---creating new ways of seeing the familiar landscape. His projects, then (and still) controversial and thought to be outrageous, were ambitious and unprecedented...

Oil on canvas, 12" by 18" (15" by 21" as framed), the subject a subtly rendered impressionist scene of large trees by a wide river, with just scant human activity present in the form of a few figures in a tiny boat in the middle distance, and a structure on the far shore. Executed in a silvery, cool palette of grays, tans and greens, this is a typical work of the well listed Scottish artist ROBERT RUSSELL MACNEE (1880-1952)...

From our African Collection: Cameroon Grasslands Bronze Mask, circa 1900. The Cameroon Grasslands is a large cultural area, which is inhabited by a large number of related peoples. These peoples can be divided into three smaller subgroups: Bamilike, Bamum, and Bamenda Tikar. Within these complexes there are numerous smaller ethnic groups, which are loosely affiliated with one another and share many historical and political similarities while retaining separate identities...

A large (extreme dimensions 64 1/2" by 48 1/2"), colorful work I am tempted to call a "wall sculpture painting", by noted contemporary California artist JOHN ROSE. The impressive piece could grace an institutional setting, as indeed many sculptures by the artist now find themselves in hotels and other public spaces and corporate collections. The photos do not give justice to the three dimensionality of the piece, the strips of painted wood layered in complex patterns...

A charming pastel portrait by Dorothy Colles which was commisioned for a "Trufood" advertizing poster. Dorothy Colles (1917-2003) was, according to an obituary in the Independent newspaper,"gifted in portraits of children". She has exhibited through the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painting. There is a water 'splash' above the head of the boy which we have not attempted to restore. Otherwise excellent condition. The picture 19.5 inches by 17.3 inches (49.5cm by 44cm)

Original oil or casein painting on board by George Joseph Habergritz (American, 1909-1998), circa 1950, offered in excellent condition. This painting measures 6" by 12" (12" by 18" in its original frame). It is signed l.c. "Habergritz" and titled on the verso: "Mexican Landscape". It is also inscribed: "Artist: George Habergritz, 47 E. 9th St. NYC" and "For Lillian, from George and Maya" (Maya Pollack Habergritz, the artist's wife). Habergritz is listed in all the usual databases...

A very interesting and unusual painting, appearing to be gouache on a prepared gessoed panel (and the piece is accordingly quite heavy for its size), featuring Native American indian dancers and onlookers in the Southwest, likely Navajos of New Mexico or northeastern Arizona. The 22 1/2" by 27" unframed work is signed at lower right "Arline Wyrick". A quick google search did not reveal any obvious links to a known artist, but she was obviously quite skilled, and this bears further research...

A fine sterling silver sculpture of a Yatch in full sail featuring gold inlay bands on the sail. Titled "Yacth" by Japanese master artist Seki Takehiko, it is in excellent condition the sculpture measures 5.5" high. The complete presentation including the glass case measures 9" long x 6" deep x 9.5" high.

A PAIR of oil on canvasboard paintings, each 20" by 24", signed at lower right by the same artist, "McKee", the subjects a rural farm in autumn, the other an eerily empty Hopperesque old house. These were found in Southern California and the scenes may well be Californian. There are a number of artists by the name McKee so it is difficult to determine who may have created these...

Vintage oil on canvas impressionist landscape with rounded low mountains, a country road passing red barns, 25" by 30" (29 1/2" by 34 1/2" framed), signed at lower right corner with what appears as "D Tutis" or "D Totis" or similar. Although the work resembles that of Vermont painter Earl A. Titus (1895-1962), the signature does not correspond with how he signed. So we have a mystery work here...

Sold together as a pair, unframed oil on masonite board paintings of trees in landscapes, the larger piece 30" by 40", the smaller one 24" by 35 1/2", both by the noted Santa Barbara/Ventura area California artist DOUGLAS SHIVELY (1896-1991). Shively was born in Santa Paula among the citrus and avocado groves, and he chose to continue to live in that scenic area his entire life, despite many overseas voyages.
