An impressive panoramic alpine landscape painting of jagged mountain peaks at sunset, or dawn (actually titled "Sunrise over the Alps", the alpenglow effect captured beautifully, 27" by 39" (36" by 48" framed), signed at lower right by the artist, Waldner, and bearing placard with the above title and again the artist name. The work probably dates to about 1960. It is in excellent vintage condition...
There are lots of signed prints out there, but few original works, by the hand of famous comedian RED SKELTON (1913-1997), who is said to have said that he made more money from his art than from his entertainment career. This is one of those scarce original works: a pencil drawing of a bird's head---likely a gull, though, possibly a young eagle...
Oil on panel painting of pink desert mountains and flowering dunes in the foreground, 16" by 20" (25" by 29" in wood carved frame), signed in the paint at lower left with a signature that appears as "Bo W(xxxxxxx)". The circa 1960 oil is by an artist who certainly must have been familiar with the palette knife California desert scenes, with rich impasto, of John Hilton (1904-1983). The style and feeling is similar. The painting could benefit from a cleaning, after fifty years...
Ink and watercolor drawing on paper of an idealized US Naval officer in his dress whites, with 15th and 16th century navigators and philosophers displayed in lower portion at his feet. THERE ARE ALSO CHARMING BONUS DRAWINGS ON THE BACK, of 1930's boxers and wrestlers,. The piece measures 14" by 10 1/2" inside the current mat (19" by 14" as framed), signed at lower right in pencil "F W Stearns 1932 6106 Christian St. Philadelphia, Penna"...
Very subtle and elegant oil on canvas, 24 1/2" by 30" (27 1/2" by 33 1/2" as framed) signed at lower right by listed Midwest artist MARY C. PETERSON and dated "31", showing an Asian inspired still life scene in monochromatic minimalist tones of beige, gray and tan. The artist added just a spot of color at lower left where two iris are in full flower. This is a particularly easy to live with painting---I enjoyed it on my wall for quite some time...
Oil on canvas street scene, most likely of Mexico, 18" by 24", unframed, signed at lower right by California painter JOSIE (JO ANITA) STARKEY (1895-1962). This is a colorful work by a noted California woman artist known for her genre paintings. She is listed in many reference works including Dawdy, Hughes, and Falk's Who Was Who in American Art, and the Dictionary of Women Artists...
A Dutch 17th century etching of a standing horse near a humble abode, 6 3/4" by 7 3/4" (14" by 15 1/2" in 20th century appropriate black frame), unsigned, and with no initials or other indication as to authorship. The work bears old pencil notations on the reverse side of the mat; there appear to be names of potential artists that were pondered by a previous observer in my position (including, it appears, question marks to himself)...
Oil on canvas, 13 1/2" by 9 5/8" in its thin old frame, signed at lower center "Ellen B. Farr", the subject her typical signature pepper tree leaves and the distinctive red "berry" seed pods. Farr (1840-1907) is quite appreciated today for her California paintings of pepper trees, still life works of poppies, citrus, native indian baskets, and landscapes...
A rare and signed portrait miniature by Charles Byrne. Done in an almost impressionistic style, the sitter is a blue-eyed woman simply presented in a white gown with fur trimming along the top edge. She is posed against a gauzy white background with blue tints to complement her eyes.
The miniature has a sight size of 2 1/2" by 2" and is in excellent condition...
Herman Armour Webster, 1878-1970, American, "Capodimonte, Italy," etching, image size 5 1/2 x 10 inches, 1927, pencil signed.
THREE circa 1960's gouache on heavy paper abstract drawings, unframed, each 24" by 18", each signed at lower right "Greene". The works definitely seem to have some age as the reverse side of the paper is brown and vintage. I cannot connect these to any particular artist so offer them as decorative mid-century works. Condition is excellent, with just one edge nick on one drawing. Each is in a protective-only plastic poster box...
An ORIGINAL drawing of a mid-19th century gentleman, 8 1/2" by 5 7/8" (16" by 13 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by the well-listed French-born artist, etcher and sculptor, ALPHONSE LEGROS (1837-1911). The drawing is primarily in soft pencil, with some watercolor in the suggestion of a chair, and some faint red in the face area. Legros was born in Dijon in eastern France. He was in Paris while still young, exposed to the art world there...
Original gouache painting of Balboa Park's California Tower and other nearby architecture, 19 1/2" by 28 1/2" in simple framing, signed at lower right by artist C.L...
An oil on canvas painting of beach dunes with three small row boats, (25 1/2" by 31 1/2", 33" by 39 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by listed contemporary French artist MARC CHAPAUD (1941-). The work is titled on the reverse "Dunes" and is dated there 1968, making it one of the earlier works of the artist. Chapaud's works have sold at auctions in France (in 2017, a work brought nearly $4,000 at auction). The artist's most recent paintings deal with French chateaux of the Loire Valley. Th...
An original pencil signed, numbered (115/135) lithograph of 1972, "Les hommes arrivent du fond de leur passe", 19 1/2" by 26" inside the mat, (28" by 34 1/2" framed), the subject of great interest to collectors of Judaica and Jewish art. Reminiscent of the best work of Marc Chagall, the imagery features a rabbi or holy scholar blowing on the symbolic shofar, or ram's horn, while a Chagallesque figure looks on at lower left. Condition appears to be excellent; not examined out of frame. Wood fr...
Oil on canvas laid on board painting of the Grand Canyon, 17" by 21" (20" by 24" as framed), apparently unsigned, circa 1940's, possibly earlier, executed in a naive manner that borders on or crosses the line to folk art. I think the technique is intentionally naive and primitive, as opposed to just the less-refined work of an amateur artist. The frame (see close-up) adds to the folk art aspects. This is a fine addition to your Southwest or Southwest folk art collection.
This is a very decorative item of impressive size for your Southwest style home: a gouache painting on cloth, roughly square at 30 1/8" by 30 7/8" plus about 3 1/2" on a side of frame and undermat......no signature that I can see but it reminds me of the popular "yeibichai" weavings of the Navajo and Hopi Southwest. The condition is excellent and this is ready for the wall. Allow for reflections in the glass.
