A beautifully executed work in pastel, 18" by 25 1/2", in a narrow metal poster-type frame behind glass with no mat, signed at upper left and dated there 1977 in Roman numerals (LXXVII)) by the noted well listed American artist SHELDON C. SCHONEBERG (1926-2013). At upper right, he titled the work "Grosvenor Park, London". The vigorously worked trees, sweep of the curved interaction of park and street, and small cars, flags and figures make for a handsome work...

Done in 1992, Poem 5 is a very stylized take on the kanji for woman女. Maki did many, many versions of woman. All of them are interesting, most of them striking. To me, this dramatic rendering strays the furthest from the actual character. Daniel Tretiak called this a Square Woman. This was done using the silkscreen process; it is not an embossed woodblock print. It measures 11.5in x 11.5 in.

A PAIR of contemporary oil on canvas works, one on canvas, 20" by 16" (26 1/2" by 22 1/2" framed), the larger piece on canvas board, 24" by 18" (30 1/2" by 24 1/2" framed), one signed with what appears as "Sichan" or similar. The frames are of identical silvery finish. Frames and paintings are in excellent condition. The expansive view out over a coast, and relaxed patios with their furniture, evoke pleasant thoughts and perhaps memories of vacations past...

Oil on canvasboard, 16" by 20" and 3" of frame and liner, circa 1950's or 1960's I believe, signed at lower left by artist "G. Diehl". At one time I thought there was some possibility that this was a work by Finnish artist Gosta Diehl. The daughter of that artist, Franciska Sundholm, wrote me to say that this is definitely not a work by her father. So this is offered as simply a competently executed modernistic still life painting...

This print is Haku Maki’s 78-6 水Water, number 108 in an edition of 151. Earlier that year,1978, he had already produced dramatic single-kanji large black and white prints. The first two, 78-1 Mountain and 78-2 Water, both horizontal prints, were 17in W x 9.25in H. They were followed soon after by 78-6, also horizontal. But this depiction of the kanji for water is nearly twice the size of the previous two: his 78-6 is 32.5 inches wide and 17 inches high (83cm W X 43.5cm H)...

It is noted for Culebra Peak, the southernmost of the so-called "Fourteeners" (Rocky Mountain peaks of at least 14,000 feet summit elevation). Child was born in Weybridge, Vermont after the Civil War...

Watercolor on paper laid on thin card painting of a fetching, dark-haired young woman, apparently in Venice (tiny gondola/architecture at far right), holding spring flowers at the water's edge, " by ", and signed at right center "E. LARRI". I do not see a listing by this name but he/she worked squarely in the tradition of 19th century Italian watercolor art. The piece was in a nondescript frame when found, and backed by curling old acidic wood. I have removed it from the frame for photography...

Oil on thin board painting of a canal with figures, boats and adjacent sun-drenched buildings, possibly Venice, unsigned, measuring 6 7/8" by 11 1/2" (13 1/2" by 18" in attractive old frame). Whether Venice, Italy, or another Mediterranean locale, this is nicely executed by a trained hand. It could well be by a listed artist but without a signature it will be difficult to place the hand. The work is slipping around loose under the gold mat and it needs to be framed with acid-free materials. ...

Original lithograph print, "Les Soliloques du Pauvre" for the jacket of the book of poems by the noted French poet Gabriel Randon (1867-1933), who went by the pen name "Jehan Rictus". The print measures 7 5/8" by 12 7/8" inside the mat, and as framed measurements are 16 1/2" by 21". Steinlen (1859-1923) of course was the major Swiss artist known for his drawings and prints during the late years of the 19th century and early years of the twentieth.
