A scarce watercolor work of Southern art, the subject a street scene with traditional historic architecture including a church, two tiny figures and a tree, measuring inside the wood frame 9 3/4" by 7 3/4" (14 3/4" by 13" framed). The scene could be New Orleans or Charleston, South Carolina; I found the work in western Virginia. There is a signature at lower right but all attempts to read it have failed, though, it does appear that the date 1905 is at lower right...

(ONE OF TWO BY THE SAME ARTIST, THE OTHER WORK SIMILAR----). Oil on board painting of a Native American woman balancing a traditional pot on her head, signed at upper left by artist Lee Willke. The work measures 18" by 14" and 22" by 18" in simple oak frame. The expression on the woman's face is precious; that by itself propels this into the "whimsical" category. The pottery is beautifully observed and note the subtle yet complex background work...

I offer this work on paper, 19" by 25" inside the mat, 26 1/2" by 33" framed in simple black frame (to be shipped without glass), as a print of some kind by the important Swiss modern artist HANS ERNI (1909-2015). Signed in the plate at lower right and dated there "60", this would appear to be a monotype, or possibly a lithograph, with hand coloring added. Several examples are to be seen in the auction record, and they are I believe mistakenly described as gouache, original, unique works...

Oil on masonite double sided unframed painting, 23 7/8" by 19 1/2", signed in orange at lower right "H.H. SHAW", the subject on one side six figures, a man, bare breasted women and children, in an obviously tropical village, the other side three figures, the woman bare breasted. This is a painting by listed American artist HARRY HUTCHINSON SHAW (1897-1989). Shaw is today most closely associated with Florida and Pennsylvania...

THREE unframed/unstretched oil sketches of California landscapes, circa 1930's to 1940's, measurements 11" by 14", 14" by 17", and 18" by 13 1/2", one signed at lower right by listed Southern California artist BERTHA TOWNSEND COLER (1865-1948). Coler was born in Ohio and studied with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase in New York City...

Done in 1992, Poem 5 is a very stylized take on the kanji for woman女. Maki did many, many versions of woman. All of them are interesting, most of them striking. To me, this dramatic rendering strays the furthest from the actual character. Daniel Tretiak called this a Square Woman. This was done using the silkscreen process; it is not an embossed woodblock print. It measures 11.5in x 11.5 in.

Decorative lithograph in colors, 13 1/4" by 19 3/4" (22" by 28" as framed), unsigned, with The Collector's Guild label affixed to the backing, 1973, (titled there as "Homecoming", but from what I can determine, "Monumental" is the title in common use). This is a decorative print in excellent condition, the paper white and fresh and colors unfaded...

A gray soapstone carving of a seal, carrying his seal trophy, signed "Jacopee" on the bottom, the official familiar small label of "Canada Eskimo Art" remaining. The dimensions are roughly 10 1/2" by 4 1/2" by 3", and weight fully 5 pounds. These carvings sold as tourist art at mid century remain popular, and a secondary market has evolved. This work is larger than many. The artist has reduced the familiar seal to a stylized, modern form...

This is an oil on canvas painting of a mounted cowboy in a forested mountain landscape, keeping an eye on several misbehaving steers. The work is signed at lower right by artist WESLEY LE ROY FULLER and is dated there 1993. His interesting cypher appears adjacent to the date. On the stretcher on the reverse the artist has signed again and added the comment "Good luck to the Elks purple pig"; and there also appears to be a price "$600" and title "Keep em out of the tember" (sic)...

From our African Collection: a Red Guro Mask from Guinea, circa 1970. This work measures 7 x 17' h, and is available for purchase. Between the Baule and the Yaure to the west, the Malinke to the north and the Bete and We to the south, the Guro people live surrounded by savannah and forest. They migrated from the north during the 16th century and number about 200,00. Guro villages have rounded houses in the northern area and rectangular houses in the southern region...

Contemporary Australian aboriginal art "dot" painting, acrylic on a thin canvas, signed on the reverse by artist POLLY PUNTJUNTA, and stamped with the Original Aboriginal Art Company stamp, of Adelaide, South Australia. The work measures 15" by 26 1/2" (23" by 34" in a wood frame with scratches). The past framer elected to place the reverse wire so as to hang this vertically, though I do not believe there is any particular reason to have done so. The work might be more logically horizontal...

Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author, and poet, renowned today primarily for his literary nonsense, in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form that he popularized...
