Oil on canvas still life of red roses on a table with ceramic vessel, 17" by 39" as framed. The painting is executed in the Victorian style, but I think it probably dates to the final years of the 19th century or early years of the 20th. I cannot find a signature. There is a framer's stamp on the stretcher from Grand Rapids, Michigan, giving some hint as to its origin perhaps. Also the corner keys are of the post-1885 style...

Hudson River School style watercolor on paper, 13 1/2" by 19" inside the mat, 24" by 30" as framed, signed at lower right "Byron Albee". This is a subtle, delicate, beautifully executed watercolor of trees and a line of stones next to a pond. Because it IS so subtle, it does not photograph impressively; but in person it is appealing. The work has survived the years in excellent condition with only a bit of well balanced overall browning of the paper...

A rare print by surrealist print maker Ozaku Seishi, professor emeritus from Tama Art University. He is best known for small edition etchings, usually up to 30 copies, limitless experimentation with printing techniques and surrealist, often graphic imagery resembling distorted reality ¬neither quite explicit nor quite horror, but rendering a fairly dark version of dreams. This lithograph on Arches paper is from a 1994 portfolio titled “Constitutional Fantasy”, vol...

Watercolor on paper landscape of lush green mountains of Kauai, a mother and her child, palm trees and an historical one story building, the Waoli Social Hall, originally built in 1841 during whaling days as a mission church, the painting measuring 18 1/2" by 25" inside the present mat (presently unframed), signed at lower right "D Williams". The work is not dated but I would guess it would have been created around the late 1960's or early 1970's...

A fine circa late 19th century watercolor painting of one of the famous narrow canals of Venice, Italy, the canal offset by sun-washed buildings, signed at lower right by listed Italian artist LUIGI LANZA (1860-1913). The work measures 7" by 11 1/2" inside the mat and 13 1/2" by 17 1/2" simply framed. A circa late 1940's to mid 1950's gallery label from Chicago remains affixed to the backing. The piece is very clean and fresh-appearing. Allow for reflections in a few images...

Bronze sculpture of a figure, perhaps hugging a guitar or bass (or, abstracted second figure?), numbered 57/300 and signed at bottom by artist I. STOLOFF (IRMA STOLOFF, New York, 20th century). The work is 11 1/4" in height, sits on a 2" high black plinth, and weighs six pounds. Condition is excellent. You would appreciate the style if you admire the work of Henry Moore, Kenneth Armitage, Archipenko, or Barbara Hepworth...

A set of eight framed collotype color prints after paintings by famous western American artist FREDERIC REMINGTON (1861-1909), originally published by Collier's Magazine, which had a contract with Remington. He was to paint a painting a month, and the prints derived from the painting would be widely distributed. The prints all bear in tiny type at lower left margin "COPYRIGHT 1909 BY P.F. Oil on canvas painting of flowers in a vase, "Gladiolas", 21" by 18", signed at lower right "Shimo" and dated there 59. The artist is OSAMU SHIMODA (1924-2000). This work came out of an eclectic collection of mostly mid 20th century Hawaiian art, much of it apparently purchased in Hawaii at that time; this one retains an old label on stretcher from Sima's Art Gallery, Ala Moana Center, Honolulu 14, Hawaii...

An impressionistic landscape of the arid American Southwest, possibly California, 20" by 30" (24" by 34" framed), signed at lower right by noted listed artist CHARLES DAMROW (1916-1989). The work features rugged mountains with no figures included. Damrow was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and headed west at age 13 on his own (the youngest of 15 children). He became infatuated with everything western, in the course of his life painting cowboys, Indians, tipis, bison, bears, horses...

Contemporary (late 20th century) oil on canvas painting of a lighthouse, and coastal rocks and sea birds, a tall ship at right, signed at lower left by American gallery artist CRAIG SMITH. The work measures 24" by 30" (31" by 37" framed). The scene resembles Portland, Maine's famous lighthouse, but a business card of the artist affixed to the reverse appears to say that this is a Nova Scotia, Canada scene. The tall ship flies the flag of Portugal and it has been suggested to me, that it is in...

This is an interesting very old monochromatic watercolor, circa late 18th century or very early 19th, measuring 4 1/2" by 8 3/4" (11" by 14" framed). The drawing has the feel of an old master drawing. The scene includes tiny figures, buildings, a willowy tree at right, and what appears as an isolated hill or butte-like feature in the distance. The work itself is not signed, but at lower right, written very faintly in pencil in the mat, is "Waterloo" and another word that is difficult to decip...

Every so often, Maki decided to create an all-white print to which he added two or three small bits of color. Daniel Tretiak talked of Maki’s fondness for adding balance to his prints especially with the use of moons or splashes of color. Poem Y is an example. The print is beautifully textured with the colored spots placed in smooth areas among the overall embossing. It measures 17 1/8 square inches and is no.15 of an edition of 50.
