In the style of the well known Gianni family of artists, is this watercolor painting of the famous trellised terrace on the world famous dramatic Italian coast, signed at lower right "A. Hunt" and titled there "Amalfi". The piece measures 7 1/4" by 13 1/2" (14" by 20" as framed). The work has some oxidation of the paper and a small dig hidden in the coastal promontory at right center but overall it has survived quite well, considering its travels without glass...
Large (40" by 32", 47 1/2" by 41 1/2" as nicely framed) painting of a woman in a rowboat on a small lake, trees providing some respite from the sun on this high summer, exceptionally bright day, signed at lower left by listed English artist ERNEST G. BEACH (1865-c. 1934), and dated there 1910. This is an impressive work, perhaps one of the artist's best, with beautiful impressionist technique and colors...
PAIR of watercolors, the larger of raspberries on the vine, painted with amazing attention to detail and realism, measuring 10 3/4" by 8" inside the mat; the smaller painting of three bright red cherries and a leaf, measuring 6" by 9" inside the mat, BOTH SIGNED AT LOWER RIGHT with initials "M. C. R.". Since acquiring these works together at a shop in California's Gold Country a few years back, I have attempted to figure out who might have created them...
Nicely executed little watercolor of a woman in her nineteenth century finery, 11" by 7 3/4" as newly framed behind quality Tru Vue glass, unsigned. Her dress looks like circa 1860 but I do not know for sure that this would have been painted then. It would make for a pleasing addition to a woman's bedroom or sitting area.
Watercolor on paper painting of a windmill, measuring 8 3/4" by 6" (14 1/2" by 11" framed), signed "A. L. Terrell" or similar at lower right, where the artist dated it "07" and added "The Hague". I do not see a listing by this name or similar possibilities, though there was an artist Adriaan Terhell who painted windmills in watercolor...
Watercolor on paper painting of creamy roses, 17 3/4" by 14 1/2" as simply framed, signed at lower right "Vivian E. Tiedemann" and dated there 1907. This is a typical turn-of-the-century work by an amateur artist, though, a skilled amateur. Such watercolor paintings of roses were popular in the Victorian era and even into the early new century, artists continued to paint them in oil and watercolor. This example is in excellent condition...

Oil on canvas painting of a fetching young red-headed girl with a doll, 24" by 18" (34" by 27 1/2" in old attractive frame), signed at lower left "P. Harwood", not dated but circa early 20th century. This is a really beautifully executed work, reminding of some of the vigorous portraits by masters like Robert Henri; but, efforts to identify the artist have not borne fruit...
This is a very fine watercolor painting featuring the distinctive profile of the dominant mountain in Marin County, California, just north of San Francisco, Mount Tamalpais. The artist was the very well listed watercolorist ALFRED VILLIERS FARNSWORTH (1858-1908). Farnsworth signed the painting at lower right and dated it there 1901. This view is from the north side, approximately near San Anselmo, looking south...

A rare Chinese Guanyin in gold leaf of Carved Wood measuring 58” height by 28” width….
Guanyin, Guan Yin or Kuan Yin (/ˌɡwɑːnˈjɪn/) (traditional Chinese: 觀音; simplified Chinese: 观音; pinyin: Guānyīn) is the Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion...
By the hand of renowned American painter AUGUSTUS VINCENT TACK (1870-1949), this is a beautifully worked portrait of a dark-eyed young woman wearing a lovely blue-white lacy dress, nervously fingering her pearls. The work is signed on the reverse and dated there 1904. Measurements are 24" by 18" (28" by 22" in what is likely the original frame). The painterly impressionist work in the dress area is masterful, as is the obviously skilled depiction of her hand...
Oil on canvas still life of red roses on a table with ceramic vessel, 17" by 39" as framed. The painting is executed in the Victorian style, but I think it probably dates to the final years of the 19th century or early years of the 20th. I cannot find a signature. There is a framer's stamp on the stretcher from Grand Rapids, Michigan, giving some hint as to its origin perhaps. Also the corner keys are of the post-1885 style...
Joseph Mortimer Lichtenauer, Jr.
(American, 1876-1966 )
Moods
Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left corner “Lichtenauer 1904.”
Painting: 28” x 40”
Frame:
Born in New York City, Joseph Mortimer Lichtenauer studied at the Art Students League with Mowbray before moving to Paris where he entered the Académie Julian. There he studied under Merson and Laurens. Additional years of travel and study in Florence, Italy no doubt influenced his tastes, evi...
Please notice the new image overlays on Whistler. These match very well. After 50 years+ of ownership and research by an Art Collector this unknown Self-Portrait of an Artist has been identified. The Old Master Collector who purchased this Portrait does not remember where he bought the Portrait. It was a habit of his to visit Antique and Art Shops around the world during his travels. He especially enjoyed working the shops in England for works of Art. He placed this Portrait in his office and d...
An old watercolor on paper laid on board painting of old buildings, with a view to open water beyond the narrow lane. The work is signed with initials "MC" or "ME" at lower left but there is no other information. The watercolor measures 11 1/2" by 9" inside the mat and 18 1/2" by 16" as framed. There is old wood slat backing remaining. This might well be a scene of old England, perhaps Cornwall, but it is really hard to say more as to the locale portrayed. It is a picturesque and timeless s...
Signed ELLIS in block letters in the lower right corner. A small brown spot is in the upper right corner. Professionally framed and matted under glass. Frame measures 11" x 21"
Watercolor on paper of herons or egrets in a marshy area, measuring 21 1/4" by 29 1/4" (54 cm. by 74 cm.), in a 1" wide modern era frame. The painting is firmly signed in ink at lower right and dated 1905. This is, judging from auction records I see, **one of the largest works by this noted Belgian impressionist artist**. Outer was born in the part of Luxembourg closest to Belgium. He studied art in Louvain and Brussels, and in the atelier of Jean-Francois Portaels. Outer was a traveler, vi...
For the collector of early, 19th century California art, here is an east coast-style still life work, 10" by 14 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right "Bertie L Emery" and dated there 1892. The shallow dish holds oranges, grapes, a banana, and possibly slices of cake or bread, the dish resting on a white cloth, on an unseen tabletop. Interestingly for art history, Emery signs her first name as "Bertie". The artist, BERTHA LUCE EMERY (1873-1957) is today closely associated with watercolors of M...
Oil on board Currier and Ives style winter landscape viewed from birds eye perspective, 18 1/2" by 24 1/2", 23" by 28 1/4" framed, unsigned, circa 1900, or possibly even earlier, painted in a primitive hand. The painting is charming and a definite folk art piece. Note the glowing windows of the inviting church on this winter day, there are two figures at left that look positively Dickensian, and the sled and figures show good detail. Condition is reasonably good, though not flawless, as would be...
Here's an unusual item, a painting on white milk glass, in oil, measuring 5 1/2" by 7 1/2" and 8" by 10" as framed. The somewhat folk art feeling work is not signed. I would judge the age as anywhere from about 1880 to about 1920----a nautical type could probably date this more accurately by noting in which decade such a ship would have existed. Condition is good with minor paint losses from scratches and aging. However the small losses are not really noticeable at normal viewing distance. ...
This is an antique painting of a rose in a tall glass vase, 13 1/2" by 5 3/8" framed, unsigned, circa 1900. Found in Rockland, Maine. The work, being of an unusual shape, might be that perfect addition to your narrow little space. There is wear on frame and the painting has even light soiling consistent with its age.
By the Danish-American sculptor and painter who between the late 1920's and his death created the famous portraits of the presidents on a South Dakota mountain, is this impressionist seascape painting on board, in a delightful range of blues and whites, 20 1/2" by 28 3/4" (28 1/4" by 37 1/4" in the old frame in which I acquired this), signed at lower right by GUTZON BORGLUM (JOHN GUTZON BORGLUM, 1867-1941). This is a work possibly painted from a California memory of the artist, at a later date...
This is a folky painting of someone's favorite St. Bernard dog, circa 1870's or 1880's (ONE OF TWO SUCH WORKS IN MY SHOP). Measuring 21" by 16" on the original very old stretchers and 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" (and 17 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed), the painting is a sweet and classic rendition of a treasured pet of the Victorian era. Vintage dog paintings are very popular and collectable. This one has evidence of its great age, with a darkened surface, no varnish, soil/blanching, very slight stretcher bar...
An old oil on canvas painting of a swift-running river in a steep mountain canyon landscape in the fall, 24 1/2" by 20" (32 1/2" by 27 1/2" in circa 1920's pie crust style frame, unsigned on front, with "Herman Herzog/Storm at Yosemite" written on the back of the canvas in an old style hand (difficult to photograph, I have provided two images). The painting is offered as a late 19th century/turn of the century oil but without a signature or provenance it will be difficult to do more than attrib...
A PAIR of watercolor paintings framed as one, in black and white, each signed lower corner "CC" or "LL", likely late 19th century or early 20th. Each measures 2 1/4" by 3 1/4" (12 1/2" by 9" as framed). There is no information inside on the identity of the talented artist. Silvery frame and hand drawn mat makes for a very elegant little piece.

Painting: 16" x 12"

The Peabody Museum in Salem, MA has five of his works in the permanent collection. He is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk and Dict...
Watercolor on paper, 6" by 15 1/4" (11" by 20" as framed), unsigned, the subject drawn completely in shades of brown, circa turn of the century or early 20th century, Included in the scene are a number of sail boats of various sizes, and there are a few coastal shacks and houses in the scene, as well as a few tiny figures. Most likely this is a work by an amateur from the east coast, perhaps Massachusetts or the like. The present mat is not professionally cut. I would recommend removing it a...
This is a very fine watercolor and gouache painting featuring a number horsemen outfitted in their best formal red riding coats, their accompanying hounds in the heat of the fox hunt. The artist was the very well listed watercolorist ALFRED VILLIERS FARNSWORTH (1858-1908). Farnsworth signed the painting at lower right and dated it there 1906, the year of the great San Francisco earthquake. The detail and sense of motion in the work demonstrates the mastery of Farnsworth. The artist was born in...
Oil on canvas painting of a small sailing craft on the sea, a dinghy towed behind it and another sailing boat on the horizon, 18" by 14" (24" by 20 1/2" framed), signed at lower left by noted American listed artist HENDRICKS HALLETT (1847-1921). Hallett was known for his marine paintings and historical works, and was especially adept at watercolor. The artist studied in Antwerp and Paris and returned to Boston for further training. He was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Boston Society ...

It came to us in what appears to be the original turn of the century picture frame. The painting is in superb condition, no evidence of any repairs or inpainting. "Born and raised in Boston, Marshall Johnson set sail for South America aboard the ship ...

Offered together here as a pair, are two watercolors in vertical format, 6 3/4" by 3 5/8" inside the mat, (11 5/8" by 8" as framed), each signed at lower right by the noted Italian watercolorist artist UMBERTO ONGANIA. He was a consistent artist, and worked exclusively or nearly exclusively in watercolor, providing portable souvenirs for 19th century travelers making the Gr...
