Robert Shaw was a contemporary of Howard Pyle and J.D. Chalfont. - He is best known for his Delaware scenes and did not exhibit widely outside Wilmington and seems to have had little interest in exhibiting nationally. He did, however, show in the Delaware Building at the World's Columbian Exposition and also at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1890. This work is dated 1909

A beautiful drawing, small but very accomplished, 5 1/8" by 7 1/8" (9 1/4" by 11 1/4" framed), signed somewhat illegibly at lower left, but fully identified in old ink on the reverse as "Palais de Justice Rue de la Place du Chatelet", the artist EMILE APPAY, 1922. Note the fine details of the Sphinx at right, lamp posts, kiosks, and people dressed in period clothing...

In 1976 Haku Maki did his eight-volume San Mon Ban--a total of 96 different embossed images. These included many items Maki had just used, would use soon and used later. I first show images of two prints like those in San Mon Ban but slightly larger. Then two images of insects in San Mon Ban and then 4 images of insects long hidden in my archives--even to me. These might all be called Maki Lite...

Watercolor coastal scene with rocks and sea birds, tiny sails on the horizon, signed at lower left by artist Wang Zhi Bin (including artist seal) and dated there 10. 1991. A nicely executed work by an artist about which information seems to be lacking. Measures 16 1/4" by 23 1/4" inside the mat, and 23 1/2" by 30 1/2" in light-colored frame. The work is in excellent condition.

A rare and signed portrait miniature by Charles Byrne. Done in an almost impressionistic style, the sitter is a blue-eyed woman simply presented in a white gown with fur trimming along the top edge. She is posed against a gauzy white background with blue tints to complement her eyes.

Armenian watercolor painting of the famous, sacred snow-covered mountain, Ararat, signed in Armenian at lower right. The work measures 11 1/4" by 16" (14" by 18 3/4" in gold frame). The work likely dates from about 1970 through 1980 or so. It is framed behind non-glare glass, which tends to blur detail. Condition is excellent. A beautifully painted portrait of a well-dressed gentleman. As superb as the painting is, it is matched by the reverse of the miniature, which has interwoven plaits of hair and an organic plaque decorated with the initials "EW" on a monument which is topped with a quiver and arrow.

The photos do not even begin to do justice to this superb piece, which has fine limning, vibrant colors, and no damage at all. The color differences and light lines on the front and back are due to reflections. The...
