This eye-catching porcelain plate features a Red Guard (Hongweibing) broadcasting on the radio with a background of the Great Wall. A slogan that reads “Qian Qiu Gong Zui, Wo Men Ping Shuo” ( We [the people] will decide the merits and demerits [of history] ) is on the plate. Like other work created by Wu, this plate was first drawn in brown then coloured with a second and/or third layer to create a 3D effect...

A hand-embroidered bag made by Pashtun nomads from Ghazni province (probably Katawaz), Afghanistan. Floral motifs combined with arabesques in herringbone stitch in silk thread on a purple silk background. The Bokhara couching technique is used to maximum effect, where the metallic threads are laid parallel to each other and fastened at regular intervals by tiny red stitches. Signed on the reverse with a chiseled signature by the artist: Keiten (Takahashi Keiten, born 1920). Showa era, circa 1960 – 1970. Born in 1920 in Yamagata Prefecture, Takahashi Keiten first studied metal casting under Nagano Tetsushi in 1950. His work was first accepted into the government-sponsored 7th Nitten exhibition in 1951. In 1963, he won the encouragement prize at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition) and from 1972 served as a judge for the exhibition...

This carved amethyst snuff bottle is a mid 20th century product. It is 2 1/8” high, 3” wide and 1” thick. It depicts two lotus pods wrapped with lotus leaves. The hard stone lid and bamboo spoon are later replacements. It is in excellent condition.
