Pair Japanese Cedar Wood Miso Merchant's Storage Tubs, or Barrels, Ca. 1940, 14 1/2" high include cover, 14" diameter top rim, heavy twisted Bamboo ropes wrapped around, lacquered chestnut color outside, Kanji writings for date and shop name on bottom for both barrels, inside is unfinished and shows beautiful aged old wood grains. A set of two incense items carved from blocks of dried lacquer, the surfaces polished to reveal the various layers and colors of lacquer used in a mottled pattern. Truly quite spectacular despite their diminutive size, the koro is 10 x 6 x 7.5 cm (4 x 2-1/4 x 3 inches), the kogo is 4 cm (1-1/2 inches) diameter and both are in excellent condition.

This is a Cultural Revolution porcelain figurine of Norman Bethune. It is more finely made than most Cultural Revolution figures and shows the Canadian doctor leading a donkey. Bethune served in the communist Eighth Route Army during the Sino-Japanese War and died from blood poisoning contracted in the operating room. He became a major embodiment of the revolutionary martyr in Cultural Revolution mythology...

From our Southeast Asia Collection, a fine and very large Khmer (Cambodian) handmade silk textile now framed as a wall hanging, executed in traditional Khmer palette using a combination of natural vegetal dyes and synthetic colors, depicting various animal and geometric motifs. A fabulous piece of black satin silk embroidered with real seed pearls to create 2 bouquets and 3 individual flowers. Custom made in the 1950's there are about 2,000 seed pearls which are individually hand sewn. There are 3 sizes of small pearls in two different shades, two are a silvery dark grey/black color and the third is a medium black. Black jet beads make up the make the stems and the center of the largest flowers. These beads are the darkest black on this material...
