This is a wonderfully hand-carved netsuke depicting Bakemono "Unreal Thing or Goblin" with a Rokuro-Kubi (whirling Neck), in other words a Goblin creature with an expanding neck like the spring of 'Jack-in-the-box", that, according to legend, twists its head around and leers in the faces of sleepers. The creature is standing on one foot and appears to be praying. Amber Double inlaid eyes. Unsigned, but attributed to the 20th century Japanese artist Koraku...

Chinese calligraphy painting of a famous poem "Li Bai" originally written in the Tang Dynasty. This poem has been rewritten by artist Zhongshan in Autumn of ??22 in Nanjing. Approximate translation of the poem is as follows:
"The sun shining (white), the furnace being prepared and the smoke spreading throughout. The waterfall bubbling in front of the river and flowing (with drops of water splashing)..."

A very rare pair of hand guards or constructed from a course woven fibre each incorporating three rows of shark's teeth secured with a fine hand made string or cord. These 'gloves' were made on the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati) probably during the first half of the 20th Century.
Condition: excellent - the fibre is frayed in places but apparently no damages or losses...

Looking as though it were cast from molten rock, this chawan has a very earthy and primal feel to it. The rich clay shows through in places hinting of ochre, yellow, and even a subtle metallic blue—cleverly mimicking the way mineral formations appear in nature. The uneven texture and pitting of the glaze serve to enhance this effect.

This is an excellent hand-carved Japanese Netsuke depicting Shoki, the demon queller, in his usual standing position, with his sword drawn. Although he appears to have captured one of them, the other Oni is playfully standing on his shoulders while pulling one of Shoki's ears.
Outstanding detail and form symmetry characterizes this miniature sculpture. Very nice contrast between the patinated robes and the highly polished Oni's and Shoki's protruding body parts.
