An unusual Japanese Awaji vase hand thrown with applied floral pieces. Though designed for ikebana, the basic bottle point form and the beautiful glaze makes this vase a very striking piece that could be displayed as an art object. The artist used his creative talents to make the vase stand out by applying pieces that appear to be a log or branch with a vine and a large flower...

Indian Hindu 20th c white marble painted black sculpture of a shiva lingam . A bit of information of this type of sculpture. For a sincere devotee, the Lingam is not merely a block of stone. It is all-radiant - talks to him, raises him above body-consciousness, and helps to communicate with the Lord. Lord Rama worshiped the Shiva Linga at Rameshwaram. Ravana, the learned scholar, worshiped the golden Linga for its mystical powers.Based on the teachings of Swami Sivananda...

Light-weighted wood, made around 1950, brown patina, slightly shining, wide face with elaborate headgear, the eyes inset with glass. This figure presumably was created not as a magical figure ("nkisi"), but as a memorial figure of a female ancestor, who was donated for being the female founder of the lineage. Such sculptures, called "ngudi" (mother of the lineage), used to be kept in a basket, together with further relics belonging to the kinship...

Asian art is not my specialty, but I believe I know enough to call this a Tibetan "thangka". Thangka's (or, tangka's, as it is also spelled), are of Nepalese origin, subsequently exported over the Himalayas to Tibet. They are works of art made to be a pictorial record of a contemplative experience or interpretation of an historical event, such as the life of Buddha...

A large cow hide blanket, similar to a hide displayed at IES Museum, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. At first appearance, one might think this in the style of western Native America rock art or primitive Australian aboriginal art, due to the abstracted human figure and geometric forms. However, the origin is Ethiopia or northeastern Africa. Extreme dimensions are 72" by 64". The age is difficult to determine. This reminds so much of rock art sprinkled about arid parts of the American west, and Native ...
