An antique Japanese Kuruma Tansu known as a storage chest on wheels made of Keyaki (Zelkova), Kiri (Chestnut) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. The front of this Tibetan Flint Pouch is decorated with silver and bronze ornamentation and an inset coral bead. The back is decorated with bronze buttons to protect the leather from excessive wear. Antique Chinese silk kesi tapestry depicting a scene of pheasants and flowers in rocky setting with pine tree, beautifully woven with painted details, framed, Ching Dynasty (mid 19th century). Size: 60 3/4" high x 32 1/4" wide

Two baskets are being offered here and both are from the Northeast, most probably from the Penobscot of Maine. They are lidded, made of splint ash, and use natural dyes of green and orange.

Basket 1, although it has a square base, is 14 3/4" in diameter and 11 1/2" in height. They are about 3 smallish splint breaks as shown in the photos, but the basket is structurally sturdy. Basket 2 has a medial sweetgrass braid and a dyed interior. The 4 3/4" in diameter and 2 1/2" in height.

A realistically formed figure of a resting sheep. The sheep is the eighth Chinese zodiac sign. The hollow form has two glazes - an overall straw-colored clear glaze with a drizzle of amber glaze that drips over its left side. The glazes have now turned iridescent from age - the amber glaze has a golden sheen. Under magnification, the glaze has a very fine crackle which is consistent with pieces of this period.

Pilgrim's sodenashi made of hand-spun cotton with writhings which are the name of the pilgrim, the year (Meiji 5, 1871) etc. The places of pilgrimage is Saigoku Sanju-Sansho (33 holy places in the west) which are for worship of Kannon and the oldest places of pilgrimage. Those are located in Kyoto, Osaka, Gifu, Hyogo, Nara, Shiga and Wakayama. The cloth in the back is also hand-spun cotton and vegetable indigo dye. In excellent condition. 45cm x 57cm

Four monkeys is playing instruments such as the shamisen (long-necked lute with three strings), the shime-daiko (small drum) and the flute. The fifth monkey is larger and is singing while holding a book in his left hand and plugging his ear with the other. They are wearing a jinbei, a summer outfit consisting of a short-sleeved jacket and shorts.

This kura (saddle) was used in the rituals which took place on the first day of rice planting.
