This is a really fine piece of Japanese Golden Age cloisonne with a very pleasing form. This phoenix design and form are unique. We have only seen one other like this and it was the mate to this one that recently sold. Condition is excellent except for a superbly filled surface chip. This marked Tong Zhi Period (1862~1874) Famille-Rose ribbed rice bowl is 2 ¼ inches tall and 4 ¾ inches in diameter. It depicts two boys from good families playing in a garden. One is feeding a bird; the other is watching two flying bats. The bird, magpie and bat represent good luck in Chinese custom. The workmanship is precise and refined. It is in great condition.

This panel displays a scene of two people in a landscape setting, one holding a flute and the other holding a fan. It was later bordered with a black silk band which has slightly separated from the panel in two areas at the top and bottom, as seen in the photographs. There are also some old stains that have little effect on the image.

Japanese incense box in the form of a flattened drum with realistic wood grain pattern in gold flake togidashi maki-e lacquer and high relief lacquer to resemble iron studs along the sides. The top of the box is done in low-relief maki-e gold lacquer with the image of a mother hen and father rooster pecking for food with their three infant chicks. A rare and wonderful bronze mortar, Baroque period of Northern Europe, 18th. century.


The mortar is inscribed with owners initials O: H: S:, M: L: and the clear date 1769, the mortar is likely somewhat older, early 18th. century and made in a bronze allow, not brass that became popular later in the 18th. century.

The mortar comes with the original Pestle and was part of the inventory (Exebition) of a Swedish Farmacy.

Antique Japanese carved wooden figure of a fu-dog (fu-lion) guardian. Traces of paint and gold guilt remain. The underside has writing in ink and a translation which reads: "This pair of Foo-lions was donated to the gate of Myoken Nichiren Shrine in Noma village of the province of Sesshu (near Osaka) on the date of 9th May, 7th year of Genroku ra. An ancient Egyptian Scarab, c. 1250 BC, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). The bottom depicts 2 antelope heads. It is 1/2” long (12 mm) and made of steatite, an easy-to-carve stone that hardens when heated.
