Kesa was originally made from old scraps of material donated to the priests. The scraps became finer and quite luxious in time. People who gave to Buddhist institutions were often keen to give very expensive items, so some fabulous kesas were created from wonderful silk brocades. This also could mean that the wealthier temples end up collecting the better fabrics or are able to send out for the expensive custom made kesas...
Suwa Sozan I enclosed in the original wooden box titled Kagyu-tsuki Take Kake-hana-ire (Bamboo Hanging Vase with Snail) bearing the Teishitsu Gigei-in Seal of the Imperial Art Academy signed inside “Sozan, with Amateur Skill” followed by the artists seal in red. It is 49 cm long and in excellent condition. The only other I have ever seen in this style is published in the rare 1971 book Suwa Sozan Sakuhin Shu page 59...
This early 20th century large export carved ivory goddess of mercy (GuanYin) is 18” high (with carved wood stand it is 20 ½” high), 4” wide and 3” thick (measured from the base). Her right hand holds a branch of willow leaves; her left hand carries a basket filled with lotus blossoms. A phoenix is standing on her side and a tiny sitting Buddha with a fire halo is in her dark, braided hair. There is an honorable Qian Long mark carved on the bottom. It is in excellent condition.
