The design of butterflies and melons is seldom encountered on Chinese porcelain, found only on a few Qianlong pieces. This shaped dish I feel is from the early 19th century but the ‘orange peel’ surface of the porcelain is often found on Qianlong export pieces. Like the Qianlong painted melons these have a pronounced ‘spotting’ in either famille rose or gold enamel on the fruits.

Chinese porcelain snuff bottle with blue cobalt underglaze designs of a flying dragon and a serpent in rolling waves below, gazing at each other. There are clouds and red/green glaze flames. It has a red agate topper, and its bottom has an illegible red marking. 19th century Size: 3.5" height, 1" width

19th century Chinese scholar’s rock / brush rest in a form of a piece of malachite perfectly resembling a range of hills covered with green vegetation. Also resembles a snail or a traveling caterpillar, can be viewed from two sides. Shape and colors may suggest a characteristic Guilin landscape of limestone peaks. Excellent natural stone with pleasant patina, fixed in carved fitted rosewood stand. Wonderful object for contemplation on scholar’s desk. Height with stand 2 7/8 inches.

19th century Chinese soapstone seal carved on the top with a Foo lion, its head down to the ground touching a ball. Very beautiful stone with extensive red veining giving extra depth to the carving - probably Shoushan soapstone. Very nice carving, beautiful patina and wear, the bottom is carved with raised characters, red seal paste in the grooves, the impression of the seal is shown on Enlargement 1. Extensive inscription on one side of the seal. Wonderful object for scholar’s table...

DESCRIPTION: This Chinese scholar’s brush is a simple brush crafted from a mottled bamboo handle, very thick bristles, and a shaped, dark horn ferrule. The brush, dating from the early 20th Century, is in very good condition and would be perfect for display in a medium to smaller sized brush pot. DIMENSIONS: 9 5/8” long (24.5 cm).

This 19th century ivory carving of a young woman wearing a straw hat and holding a fish is 11” high (13 1/2” high with hardwood base), 2 ¾” wide and 2” thick. This young woman is the central figure in a well-known Chinese opera called “The Fisherman’s Revenge” (Da Yu Sha Jia). The story concerns an old fisherman was threatened by a ruthless provincial governor. The governor insisted that the fisherman marry off his beautiful daughter to become the governor’s concubine...

This early 20th century ivory carving of a young woman is 12 1/8“ high (13 3/4” high with hardwood carved base), 2 1/8” wide and 1 ¾” thick. This tripod Chinese incense burner is an early 19th century product. It is 8 ¾” high and 8” wide (measured from both handles). The three legs are the form of Chinese mystical beast’s 饕餮 (Tao Tie) face and claws. The two handles are the image of Pi Xiu 貔貅 and the top is a form of Foo Lion. The body is covered with floral designs; cloud patterns appear on the top rim of the burner. There is an honorable “Qian Long Nian Made” mark on the bottom...
