A good early Arita Ewer of European form, probably derived from a German stoneware precedent, and decorated in the style of Chinese Transitional export ware with a repeating pattern of bands of Birds and flowers. The jug stands 21.5cm and is in good condition with no chips or restorations, a short trivial hairline to the rim and to the handle, see image no 5. These are usually dated to the period 1660-80...

Okutani Shuseki (1871-1936) was born in Osaka and lived in Kyoto for most of his life. His artistic lineage is among the very best. He, along with Yamamoto Shunkyo and others, studied under Mori Kansai, who was the pupil and adopted son-in-law of Mori Tetsuzan, who was one of Maruyama Okyo's best pupils. Like all painters of the Mori family school, Shuseki's nature paintings are remarkable for their unsentimental naturalism, showing his keen interest in the essence of nature...

Getzuzan inherited from his renowned father an effortlessness with the brush, shown here in the easy curves of the robe and face of the 12th Century Zen master, Taikobo, and the gentle washes that are used to compose the soft landscape that is the lovely place where he meditates and fishes. The Koto is a string instrument that originated in China and came to Japan in the 7th ¨C 8th century. The Japanese Koto is a large instrument, about six feet long. This rare smaller version of Koto from Meiji Period (1868~1911) is 21 inches long, 4 inches wide and 2 ½ inches tall. It has a hollow body made from Kiri wood, underneath the body are two sound holes, one at each end. There are 13 strings which are tied over at each end of the body...

Beautiful Japanese bronze figure of a seated Jurojin, the god of wisdom and longevity. He is seated holding a fan and leans on a recumbent deer. Wonderful lines and use of color patina. Signed Tokumitsu. Taisho Period. With hardwood stand. Size: 8 1/2" high

This very well carved and designed Japanese ivory okimono is 5 ¾ inches high, 2 ¼ inches wide and 1 ¾ inches deep (measure from the base). It depicts a Buddha standing on the back of a dragon which is rising from an ocean wave. It has great patina. There is a red maker’s mark on the bottom. Aside from an old loss which had been re-carved and polished, it is in excellent condition.

A finely painted sometsuke bowls decorated with alternating reserves of three leaping koi divided by a criss-cross ground or “nets” and a central motif of a Chinese landscape featuring a figure collecting fire wood with his head looking skyward. This is probably a representation of Ceng Shen (So Shin) collecting fire wood, a disciple of Confucius , who whilst looking at the moon suddenly became aware that his mother needed him, a popular Confucian parable of filial piety...
