Rather unusual late Taisho - early Showa (1920s) Japanese boxwood scoop for loose tea, its handle carved as the head of angry Daruma, Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. Beautifully carved, nice patina, signed on the front with 3 characters that appear to read CHUKOBI. It is very unusual to see signed tea scoop. Length 3 inches.

1900-1920s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese burlwood stand with live edge and two sides with wave shaped edges, to be used for placing small objects during tea ceremony or display of okimono. Wonderful dense wood with supremely beautiful texture resembling swirling clouds, in excellent condition. Size 6 x 5 inches, 0.35 inches thick.

Large furoshiki made of hand spun cotton and vegetable indigo dye. It has tsutsugaki (freehand drawing with paste-resist-dye technique) crane and turtle motif. 19th century or earlier Japanese sword kashira (metal pommel at the end of the hilt of a sword) with gilded decoration of samurai crests of paulownia leaves. Well made, finely textured ground called nanako, which means “fish-eggs” as it resembles fine rows of caviar, wear as can be seen on photos. Length 1.32 inches.

Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese buffalo horn kushi (hair comb) with carved and gold lacquered decoration of a drum in garden settings among flowers. Superbly made, crisp carving, excellent lacquering with various colors, wonderful work in Japanese taste, in great condition. Length 3.37 inches.

Fukagawa 4 1/2 inch diameter fruit or sauce plate (could be used for dessert or hors d'oeuvre.) Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration. Mt. Fuji mark in underglaze blue inside the foot ring. This service piece is also consistent with the traditional Japanese "Mukozuke" - appetizer dish or bowl - which could range in shape and proportion from a shallow bowl to a high walled cup-like form...

Japanese Meiji to Taisho period ogi folding fan decorated with a single bird in flight over treetops. Signed at the right and with artist's seal. Late 19th to early 20th century. Measures about 8 3/4" vertical x 18 7/8" across from tip to tip. Very good, clean overall condition with some minor crinkling of the paper at the corners. The paper at the right edge is slightly distressed. From an old New Orleans collection.
