This is a beautiful and unique cloisonne box. It has great workmanship and a beautiful rare deep purple ground color. It is not signed but was probably created by Hayashi or Kinuken. It is a little bigger than most boxes measuring 5 3/4 inches by 4 5/8 inches and 2 5/8 inches tall. Has a scratch on the underside shown in the images. This special box is from a spectacular Cloisonne collection and acquired almost 50 years ago.

Very rare cast bronze sculpture of the Chinese monk Xuanzang with a pile of Buddhist scriptures rolled up and stacked in the pack on his back and a lotus leaf over his head from which dangles an incense burner, as he returns to China from India.
In his hands he was holding a scroll and a fly whisk that are now missing. Figure stands on an irregularly shaped base. Japan, mid Edo period, 18th century.

This antique Japanese Marquetry box is a good example of the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that marked the Japanese Meiji Period. A high grade Japanese Kura samurai saddle detailed in high relief lacquer. The maewa (front arched plate) and shizuwa (rear arched plate) display a lacquer relief carp climbing a waterfall motif. The maewa and shizuwa are connected by two igi (contoured side bands). The igi rest on either side of the horse's spine and serve as the under frame for the leather seat (basen or kura tsubo) and are slotted for stirrup straps (chikara-gawa or gekiso) to pass through.
