The only differences between this matching pair of Japanese woman's hair combs are the very slight details in the hand-painted design and the size and spacing of the tines. The finely detailed lacquer design was painted in 3 shades of gold. Unfortunately the minute details, flower petals and tree knots are hard to see in the photos.

A Fukagawa porcelain 7 1/4 inch diameter serving bowl. Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration. Mt. 19th century ichii (yew wood) netsuke of a resting wild boar, its head raised. Skillfully carved out of chosen matsu (Korean pine wood) in characteristic Hida school ittobori (one cut) style with clever use of wood texture to represent the creature’s fur and add to the charm of the piece. For similar examples see Bushell’s NETSUKE FAMILIAR AND UNFAMILIAR, p. 128. Excellent rendition of its alert posture, wonderful mellow patina. Length 1.96 inches.

Pair Japanese Brass/Bronze Hibachi, late 19th century Meiji, with high relief design of travelers in beautiful landscape setting, elephant handles on both sides, 8 3/4" high, 9 7/8" diameter on top rim, 12 1/2" diameter include handles. A large Japanese porcelain plate with blue and white decoration showing a bird sitting in a peach tree. The chargers' decoration has been done in a manner that should appeal to Chinese style and taste. In Chinese mythology the peach is symbolic of long life and immortality, and the hoho bird also carries the wish for long life.
