Very large Japanese shigaraki jar. with "watermelon" style blue and green glaze drips over a thick crackle cream base glaze. It tapers to a very narrow foot, with a drainage spout. Beautiful original condition, 19th century.

A bride of the Yi Chinese Ethnic Minority in Yunnan Province, would have worn the "cock" hat for her wedding day. The hat is made using layers of cotton fabric with a stiffiner between the layers to maintain the shape. Using colorful cotton thread, hat was extravagantly hand embroidered. A few traditional silver ornaments including the bubble, flower and butterfly were added.
Now, it is the very lucky Yi girl who can use her great grandmother's bridal hat for her own wedding...

Very beautiful and delicate antique lacquered mask of Xienfang Xiaojie, Miss Vanguard, wearing her characteristic phoenix headdress ; very expressive handwork, remnants of original marouflage.
Due to its quality and sophistication, this mask is probably a rare « court » nuo mask which belonged to the same set as M-T1Q. Very good condition, some lacquer missing (see pix). 24 x 16 cms. 19th C or before. RM 93,145,163; MC 122-125 (see bibliography)

Beautiful 18th century black stone schist of vishnu with four arms. The arms hold a flower, a talisman with a 5 point star, a chile, and one hand is open palm outward with a dot in the middle. There are two attendants, one on either side. It measures 20" tall by 10" wide. Has metal base 4" deep.
A pair decorative Indian brass vases with engraved decoration of carnation tendrils, embellished with red, orange and black enamel. Condition: some traces of usage, few tiny enamel losses. Dimension: 24.9 cm and 25.2 cm high.
This antique childs toy was brought back from Chinese by an American Missionary during the early 19th century. The snake or possibly a dragon has jointed body which can easily be moved to assume different positions. Obviously hand carved in the Chinese folk art tradition, this toy is in excellant condition. It displays nicely on the custom made stand.
Unusual Miao embroidered central panel, of a wedding apron costume. There is a coiled dragon in the center with two phoenixes above- surrounded with longevity characters, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures. It has a tattered calendered silk black border silk weft embroidered all the threads are handspun. The orange dye has bled into the white field some, so please see enlargements. Tall Japanese Sumida Gawa tankard with 6 mugs. All have the same potter's mark. Mugs measure 5" high, Tankard is 9.5" high. All are in very good condition except for a missing piece from the scroll on one mug, and broken thumb on another. Dates early 20th century.
This baby carrier is from the Miao ethnic minority of Qui Yang. Characteristic of the antique Miao baby carriers from this area, the surface decoration is composed of very tiny cross stitches which form geometric embroidery pattern which, to Western eyes, resemble snowflakes...

A quite large figural silver betel box worked in repousse depicting a reclining, decorated elephant. Base marked "T90%" and Chinese character mark. Condition: traces of usage, few small nicks. Dimension: 18.5 cm long x 11.5 cm high, weight: 256 g.
A painting in gouache on paper depicting Krishna as a seven year old boy in dancing costume. In this form he is known as Shri Nathji. This distinct tradition emanates from Nathadwara in Rajasthan and these paintings were probably intended for domestic shrines. 19th century.

In old China, a carpenter's tools were also considered as an symbol of the quality of his craftsmanship. This antique carpenter's tool has a hand carved dragon with some of the original paint remaining in the crevasses. The plumb bob is made from a section of animal antler. The old Chinese carpenter would fill the bowl with charcoal and it would be used to snap a straight line...
Antique Japanese boxwood netsuke, wonderfully carved into an adorable pair of monkeys wearing vests. The larger monkey sits on his hands with his little feet crossed over each other, and a smaller monkey climbs on his head.

A charming Chinese porcelain vase with a painting of a young boy playfully dangling a spider in front of a cat while his mother appears to be feeding a bat (for good luck). Dating very early Republic period and in excellent condition with all enamels intact, this vase measures 9" high.
