An old and larger than average soft wood Dayak war shield painted with anthropomorphic figures and faces in red, black and white pigment. This item was made during either the 19th or very early 20th Century. Condition: very used; un-restored and un-repainted. There is much wear to the surface and edges and the decoration appears "faded". There is a very old replacement section of wood to the bottom left which appears to have been "cannibalised" from another old shield...

Japanese tenmoku ware ceramic vessel with ribbed handle, short front spout, and wide open top. The thick oil slick glaze stops just short above the foot left in buff. Tenmoku glaze is made with feldspar, limestone, and iron oxide. The more quickly a piece is cooled, the blacker the glaze will be. Tenmokus are known for their variability. During their heating and cooling, several factors influence the formation of iron crystals within the glaze...

TO MIYOSHI SHRINE FROM YAMATO SUE

The letters made of copper plates originally attached to a votive wooden tablet dedicated from its worshipper named Yamato Sue to the Miyoshi-jinja shrine in Akita prefecture. Meiji period (1868-1912). Letter of Kami (God): approx. 11 x 13cm (4.33 x 5.11in). Besides, as seen the last three photos, changeable to "God of Clay", "Eros", and "Excellent luck" by free anagram arrangement...

Very large, measuring 7" long, old Cambodian betel nut container nicely crafted in the form of a turtle. Made from a low-grade silver, it is in very good antique condition, no cracks, no repairs, etc. Measures 7 inches long and 3.5" high. Marked PH

An interesting antique bronze figure of Krishna dancing on serpent, cobra, Indian or Nepalese, perhaps c. 19th. century.

Beautifully made out of dense brown wood allowing for fine teeth, superb lacquering, wonderful work in Japanese taste, some losses as can be seen on photos. Length 3.32 inches.

DESCRIPTION: A large Japanese Sumida vase with three children in high relief playing on a bridge against the red ribbed body. The neck rim is covered in a rich, thick flambé glaze that runs down the shoulders onto the traditional, cold painted body. This vase is in excellent condition with no chips and very little rubbing...

Antique Japanese bird mask of Karasu Tengu. This mask represents the legendary creature represented in Japanese folklore, the demon fighters who trained Yoritomo his sword skills. The gold eyes painted on the mask denote the demon character. Back of mask shows artistic carving in the kiri wood, including embossed mark of maker Osaki Kotasu. Whimsical rendering of a high relief horse (uma) tied to a pine trunk. The horse is completely harnessed with its kura and abumi fittings. The finish is untouched showing signs of age and patina.

Very large Burmese hammered repousse copper-brass-bronze alloy bowl, with traces of silver, decorated with 3 relief panels depicting flowers and the engraving "Thiri Mingalar Monastery" as well as stylized scroll foliage. Such bowls were primarily used in Buddhist ceremonies. 19th Century. Nice natural aged patina. Good condition. Size: H. 16 cm. x 30 cm. diameter at center (H. 6.5" x 12" diameter).

Japanese calligraphy box made with Keyaki (elm) wood in original dark red lacquer finish. The lid lifts open on three iron hinges with a top iron handle to a shallow lacquered compartment for storing calligraphy papers, and closes securely with a small iron latch. The front of the box holds three drawers with iron lock plates and handles on floral shaped iron mounts.

Antique African Wrist Knife with protective leather sheath. When the sheath is removed from the metal disc, a decorative piece worn on the wrist is turned into a lethal weapon. The Turkana are a pastoralist people of northern Kenya. Knowing no boundaries such knives can also be found in southern Ethiopia. Size 4.5" by 4.5"over 2.25" interior diameter very very sharp. Sorry no stand with this piece.

Unusual 1890s - 1910s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese lacquered wood nyoi - a Buddhist scepter - made out of a natural root. Nyoi, or Ruyi scepter is a traditional symbol of scholarship and transmission of knowledge. Lacquered in Negoro style with bright red body and black patch on the head. Striated wood surface texture is nicely felt under lacquer, wonderful patina, very pleasant to the touch...

Lovely double gourd, Dehua porcelain small vase, circa late Qing or Republic Era.. Please note the third enlargement the surface appears to be smudged, this area originally had a handle that broke of and has been polished down. H: 11.3cm/4.4in and D: 6.8cm/2.9in. A simple well balanced elegant piece, suitable for a sing rose. Basic stand included.
