Dripping with gold, this artist really takes things to the extreme, challenging and yet incorporating something of the idea of Wabi into his outlandish works. Here is an exceptional (and rare) large tsubo by Ichikawa Toru enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It features a surface of raised white bumps like ray or sharkskin. The form is rough, more a natural growth than some plotted design. Brilliant gold flows over the textured white...

Rich, generous and timeless Aka-Raku chawan by veteran descendant of Honami Koetsu; Hon'ami Sokyu. This full and rounded form chawan is reminiscent of chawan from the edo period and was formed by hand molding, tebinari, the traditional manner in which Raku has been made for centuries. Relying on a tradition passed down from its founder, through his master, Honami Koson, Sokyu works in an unbroken line of transmission all the way back to Koetsu...

Elegant Hagi chawan with fine lip and kodai foot and a creamy and drippy rim of opaque glaze around the lip.

4.8" X 3.25"

Though marked, the seal is unread. This chawan was purchased at a store in Hagi. The original owner could not wait the extra day for the wood box, so it is presented here in a Hagi store gift box. It was thought that this chawan was made by Notomi Choun, but I will leave the detective work to the next owner.
