CLARK (1889-1956). Clark was born in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, and died in Washington, D.C. Evidently he traveled widely, having studied with W. L...

Among several works I am offering by the artist, this is a set of EIGHT offset color prints after watercolor paintings **(ONLY FIVE ARE SHOWN IN THE PRIMARY IMAGE; EMAIL FOR IMAGES OF THE FINAL THREE)**, each hand signed in lower margin, and each titled, (each 10 1/2" by 13", unframed), by California master watercolor artist MILFORD ZORNES (1908-2008). Old circa 1950 painting on board of the majestic Grand Canyon in Arizona, apparently unsigned, measuring 17 3/4" by 22", plus pleasingly old patterned frame, 1 3/4" wide on a side. The artist had talent but the work is also fairly primitive, in a charming way. A lot of effort went into painting this. I would almost describe it as folk art. Materials suggest a late 1940's or early 1950's age. There's some wear on the frame especially at lower right corner...

This is an original etching, 11" by 16 1/2" (17" by 21" as framed), by American artist Kerr Eby (1889-1946). The title of the work is "Cattle Ford", and it was executed in 1945, in an edition of 100 apparently. Eby was born in Tokyo to Canadian missionaries but was in the United States by age 3. At 18 he went to New York City for art education, working for a lithographic firm to enhance his financial situation, gaining valuable experience that served him well later in life...

Oil on canvas laid on board painting, circa 1950, titled in artist hand on reverse "The Rail Fence", 13 1/2" by 17" (17 1/2" by 21" framed) signed at lower right by the artist MYRON CHESTER NUTTING (1890-1972). Nutting was born in Nevada. He became known in California for landscape and portrait works. He and his wife spent time painting in Cambria on the scenic Central Coast in 1939 and again from 1953-1955. Apparently he also spent time in Texas...

A group of THREE 19th century English botanical prints, two framed identically in gold with closed corners, the third framed in a different gold frame with beading. The matching pair measure 19 1/2" by 17 1/2" in the frames; the final piece slightly smaller at 19" by 16". The print in that latter piece, by artist Fitch, has horizontal creases, one sharp; the year "1846" is written in pencil at bottom edge...

A highly detailed etching in brown ink, featuring canal-side classic old architecture of Amsterdam, 12 1/2" by 9 3/4" plus narrow wood frame, pencil signed at lower left margin by the very important Dutch-born 20th century artist WILLEM GERARD HOFKER (1902-1981). At right in pencil is "epreuve d'artiste" and "no. 24" in ink. Hofker was born in The Hague and received early art instruction from his father's friend, the famous artist Isaac Israel...

A lovely highly impressionist oil on board painting of coffee pots and creamers on a table, apparently unsigned, and of vintage age, possibly 1930's or 1940's I believe. The work measures 14 1/2" by 15 1/4" (18" by 18 1/2" framed). On the reverse of the old board is written in old hand in pencil what appears as "Robert Swasey/327 Spring St./Portland Maine". I have looked for the name Robert Swasey in standard art search sites and have not located a known recognized painter by this name...

Dramatic linocut print, the sheet 13" by 20", unframed, numbered at lower left 6/12 and pencil signed at lower right and dated there 1971, the "HB" blind stamp adjacent, by the important and still highly underrated Swiss-California modernist HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT (1904-1994). The subject is somewhat uncertain; perhaps a look at a catalogue raisonne of the artist's graphic works would provide the title, but skulls and other references to death seem to predominate, and the ink is black. At lower l...

Antique drawing in charcoal on paper of four women who appear to be in surf or sand at water's edge, apparently unsigned, probably European and 19th century. The figures are somewhat heroic, as if survivors. Possibly a preparatory study for a painting, this work's authorship is unknown, but obviously the artist was talented and probably even listed and known. The sheet, 8 1/4" by 14", is seemingly glued to an illustration board backing. The paper is not rag paper so that would likely limit t...

78-2 (Water) In 1978 Haku Maki was nearing the end of his artistic effort using kanji (Chinese characters) as the main theme of his work. This print is one bold kanji, for Water. To make it easier for his gaijin admirers to know what it meant, he wrote "water' in the bottom margin. The effect if the print is bold, the character stretches across the paper; it has a gold Sun (akin to a splash for accent and decoration, near the center of the print), and the characteristic Maki seal in the lower r...

A softly drawn work featuring the head of a putto, between wings, on a trimmed sheet of paper, somewhat irregularly shaped, measuring 6 1/2" by 11 3/4" (12" by 17" in modern-day gold frame). There is no signature. Frame has slight chip loss at upper left corner. A true antique drawing with considerable age; how old, it is not easy to say with certainty. There are light folds and creases. Paper is affixed at edges and corners to modern board. Allow for reflections in a few images.

Antique watercolor painting, beautifully executed, the image featuring a wrapped ceramic vessel, old leather-bound books, and a pair of red ornate slippers, the work signed at lower right in pencil "Emily J. Hare 1892". The painting, paper laid on a thin board, measures 10 1/2" by 14 1/2" and 14" by 18" framed. Despite the obvious skill of the artist, the only online references I see to this name are to a woman born circa 1871 in Maine to English and Canadian parentage. In a 1914 Boston schoo...

By the Liege, Belgium-born artist ARMAND HENRION (1875-1958), a fine color etching in oval shape, of two clowns in full makeup, pencil signed and numbered 19/500. The artist is known today for his wonderfully expressive depictions of the clown, as well as mime reactions. Most of the works are actually self portraits. The depictions in these portraits reveals an affinity for humanity rarely captured in portraiture. He worked generally in oil but also created a number of prints similar to thi...
